Windows 9 is... Windows 10

#1 Post by joby_toss »

Softpedia wrote:Surprisingly, Microsoft isn’t calling its new OS version Windows 9, as everyone believed, or Windows Threshold, as some people close to the matter hinted, but Windows 10 in what’s pretty much the most surprising decision for the “new Microsoft.”

Terry Myerson, head of the OS division at Microsoft, said that Windows 10 would run on as many devices as possible and will even span new categories, hinting that it could even power small devices such as smartwatches.
...
The Start menu will finally be brought back and together with it, Microsoft is also introducing a new search option that allows users to look for information not only locally, but also online. Of course, Bing powers the search option, just like it was the case with the similar feature on the Start screen.

At the same time, Microsoft is introducing multiple desktops, which are great for those working with multiple apps at the same time and want to keep things organized on their screen.

lolol ... you mean OS 10? Isn't it really Windows 9.5? :D

Anyway, the true purpose is obvious: to avoid product confusion with Windows 95. They must have laid off the person that told them this "cuz it's so next generation" explanation was stupid. Just ask the folks around Java about jumping version numbers. Back then it was to "better reflect the level of maturity, stability, scalability and security of the J2SE." (source)

Reason: (cutting the last line of my post as it sounded really cynical in retrospect)

Looks like this could become the system that Windows 8 should have been: A system that provides a "touch" interface to make it usable on Tablet devices and, at the same time, doesn't suck on "traditional" Desktop computers.

Though I still don't like that flat/monochrome design they introduced with Windows 8 (big step backward compared to the "Aero" design) and that still seems to be present with Windows 10. The design they used in the early Windows 8 preview versions (a somewhat "modernized" Aero) looked so much better than what they used in the end. So I hope Windows 10, unlike Windows 8, will offer a way to change/customize the design without dubious hacks.

I hate that flat design, too, but I think we're in minority, as it is here to stay (it must have something to do with touch technology).

Why Microsoft loves Linux
Interesting article, but I sort of recoiled from the idea as either false or misleading. Microsoft is one that's always seeking to set formats and build standards (Office, Windows, etc.). Linux and many open source technologies are and have been extremely disruptive to closed standards and protocols. That Microsoft is comfortable running programs on top of Linux is one thing, but that they are going to play nice with other non-Microsoft tools is quite another. Their server and client platforms will continue to be closed source but for a few minor areas and continue to offer fewer features to non-Microsoft clients.

Microsoft today provided us with the first glimpse into its new browser project for Windows 10 which will not only provide users with a new way to browse the web, but will also put the end to the Internet Explorer era once and for all.

I wonder if Samsung knows I own 2 of their TVs (and if they are upset that I watch pron on them)... does Beko know that I own one of their cooking station?... I've bought a Fiskars axe today and guess what: no one asked for my name and location... Maybe they don't care about me like Microsoft does. Yeah, that's it, I'm sure!

P.S. the sad thing is that something outrageous today will become normal tomorrow...

It's already normal -- but not any less sad -- today. :(

When public representatives lead the assault on civil rights, it shouldn't be surprising to find for-profit corporations threading a path already beaten. I guess it's up to Joe User to say "Enough! This stops now." but somehow I'm not very optimistic about it...
