Nitro PDF Reader

#1 Post by webfork »

I had some success with the Pro version so I went digging into the freeware version of this powerful PDF viewer that has some unique features (especially the MS Office converter and some of the edit functions).

Status: Not portable. Writes a lot of data to the SYSTEM32 folder, AppData\Roaming, All Users\Reader, and probably other places. I think much of this is due to have an integrated print-to-pdf component that involves driver installation. Either way, this tendency to throw itself far and wide meant I didn't even bother with the uninstall/copy step.

Testing notes:
  • Setup: Win7x86

    Steps:
    1. Downloaded with a random email address (it doesn't appear to require I give it a real address)
    2. Run Installer
    3. At the License agreement, go into configuration and uncheck both "set nitro as default handler" and "Install PDF Plugin"
    4. (Requires admin)
    5. Again uncheck the prompt to make it the default re
    ader
Regardless, it's still a far better tool than Adobe's crap PDF viewer. I'll still recommend this to people who need a solid basic editor/viewer but can't put down cash.
