Portability
EmEditor has both x32 and x64 portable versions. EmEditor seems to be stealth.

Instructions
  • Download either x32 or x64 archive.
  • Extract the archive to a folder of your choice.
  • Run EmEditor.exe.
  • Settings are saved inside program folder.

Requirements
EmEditor supports all Windows versions from Vista to 10.

License
EmEditor Free is available for personal use only.

Note
For me EmEditor Free is very limited, even full screen is not available in the free version.
I have read that EmEditor Free is very good at editing very large files but I don't have such files, I have not tested it with huge files and therefore I cannot confirm.
I suppose that TP109 might be interested to test EmEditor Free and include it in his Text Editor Performance Tests.

I'm a little bummed it won't do something as basic as a Find-Replace, but I can see some of it's other features making it worth the effort. Thanks for the downgrade instructions.

The program was discussed at some length in this speed test thread:

In fact EmEditor Free has Find/Replace- see screen-shot "EmEditor - search", it is mentioned in the Features section as well.

I have been using this program for many years, since v.5.00.1. Absolutely the best program by all criteria, at least for my needs.

EmEditor appears to be good program. This editor wasn't included in the text editor performance tests because testing was limited to freeware editors and because it doesn't run on XP. See the below forum topic for why EmEditor was not included in the text editor performance tests:

Text Editor Performance Tests - EmEditor

The database entry for EmEditor Free mistakenly claims that EmEditor was included in the Text Editor Performance tests and "beat a variety of other text editors." That is an error that should be corrected.

I used to use EmEditor years ago, I even got the paid version. The problem with it is it truncates the paths in the recent files list. Did they make this optional?

I contacted the developer several times years ago, but it never got changed so in the end I dumped the software. It`s a problem for me because the recent files list would show like 30 files, but the paths would all be the same, even though they were different files. So, I never knew which file I was opening. Why it`s truncated I have no idea, it`s stupid. I took a quick look at this again recently, but it`s still truncating the paths and I can`t see anything in the settings to disable it, unless I missed it?

That's 100% my fault. Sorry about that.

Topic update: EmEditor v20.0.0 released (release announcement at www.emeditor.com /emeditor-core/emeditor-v20-0-0-released/; full changelog at www.emeditor.com/text-editor-features/history/).

I've been toying a little with EmEditor lately and was quite surprised to discover that the 64-bit version more than doubles disk cost (~117MB) when compared with the 32-bit version (~54MB).

Turns out the latter has a single main executable for the editor, while in the former the same name executable is just a wrapper and there are three(!) different copies of the main executable -- named 'ee128.exe', 'ee256.exe', and 'ee512.exe'.

In my case, whenever I launch the 64-bit EmEditor, it's 'ee128.exe' that gets executed. Now, can anyone explain the reason for this?

My first guess was it's tied to system memory, but my system has 16GB RAM so I don't get why the smaller footprint executable is the one being launched...

And can I just rename one of them to 'EmEditor.exe' and get rid of the rest, for example? (Rhetorical question, I will try that next...)

BTW, EmEditor portability is officially achieved by the following procedure:

To create the 64-bit portable version:

1. Download EmEditor Professional (64-bit installer) from the download page.

2. In the Command Prompt window of the Run dialog box, run the following command. A sub folder will be created, and all the installer contents will be extracted into the sub folder.

Code: Select all

msiexec /a "(...path...)emed64_18.9.3.msi" /qb TARGETDIR="targetpath"
(if the installer file name is emed64_18.9.3.msi)

3. Copy all the contents in the folder into an install folder such as a USB portable drive.

4. In the same folder, create an empty file as eeUseIni.ini.

The above procedure creates the 64-bit portable version.

Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX, also known as Sandy Bridge New Extensions) are extensions to the x86 instruction set architecture for microprocessors from Intel and AMD proposed by Intel in March 2008 and first supported by Intel with the Sandy Bridge processor shipping in Q1 2011 and later on by AMD with the Bulldozer processor shipping in Q3 2011. AVX provides new features, new instructions and a new coding scheme.

AVX2 (also known as Haswell New Instructions) expands most integer commands to 256 bits and introduces fused multiply-accumulate (FMA) operations. They were first supported by Intel with the Haswell processor, which shipped in 2013.

AVX-512 expands AVX to 512-bit support using a new EVEX prefix encoding proposed by Intel in July 2013 and first supported by Intel with the Knights Landing processor, which shipped in 2016.

A likely explanation, thanks billon. I'm still unsure of what to do in the case of EmEditor, though...

https://www.emeditor.com/text-editor-features/history/new-in-version-19-2/ wrote: Improved the speed by dividing the core program into 3 executable files — ee512.exe for AVX-512, ee256.exe for AVX-2, and ee128.exe for SSE2 instruction sets (64-bit only). EmEditor automatically selects the most optimized executable file by default, or a user can select any executable file as long as the current CPU supports the corresponding instruction set.

Great! :sunglasses:

So, that settles it. I'll stick with the least denominator, I think.
