Variety of possible portable software
Variety of possible portable software
This program seems portable from all I can tell. I haven't checked registry entries but I've moved it between several computers and had no issue.
PSPad - My favorite text editor ... can be downloaded in a CAB format, which behaves like a zipfile.
http://www.pspad.com/
Portblocker - lets you close off ports if your firewall doesn't give you that capability.
http://www.analogx.com/CONTENTS/downloa ... pblock.htm
Core Mini SFTP server - great for setting up secure downloads/uploads
http://www.coreftp.com/server/download/msftpsrvr.exe
MD5Summer - great MD5 generator and verifier for multiple subdirectories ... terrific for making sure CDs and DVDs maintain integrity.
http://www.md5summer.org/
CamStudio portable... which I guess portableapps just picked up... lets you make videos -- great for tech support demonstrations.
http://portableapps.com/node/3572
WinHTTrack - website downloader ... OSS and available in zip format
http://www.httrack.com/
TightVNC - A much better Remote Desktop software than regular VNC
http://www.tightvnc.com/
NoteTab light - zip - another basic text editor
http://www.notetab.com/ntl.php
... thanks for running this site! I'm a big fan.

MD5 Summer may still qualify
roddersg already reported on the program:
http://portablefreeware.com/forums/view ... =md5summer
But you can tell the program NOT to associate with .MD5 files. Not sure if his post was clear on that point.

Hi webfork!
Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate them.
I checked the database.
Anyway there are two possible candidates for the Collection:
Portblocker http://www.analogx.com/CONTENTS/downloa ... pblock.htm
Core Mini SFTP server - great for setting up secure downloads/uploads

That's odd... I could swear I checked for those. Maybe the box I searched only checked the Forums and not the files listing. Apologies.
Anyhow, thanks for the reply! Hope those apps help.

Well, this has been a fairly poor first post, then. Hopefully the PortBlocker program can be the first thing approaching a firewall for portable software.

Don´t worry, Webfork. Hopefully we will test it "in a while" depending on the number of new issues we have to deal with.
Unfortunately this is not a full time job, so we "ask" users to be very collaborative (by checking already present entries and -this is great!- by testing the portability) because if I test wrong entries (as moderator) I get a part of my time lost and cannot update the database for the other users.
Anyway starting to post in a wrong way, it´s a part of the game. I did it too when I wanted to become an ACTIVE USER, like it seems you are going to be
So: thanks for the posting!!!

Yes, absolutely. I'm working on a CD distribution of free Portable Apps that I'll post to a torrent database for support purposes. I already have a 700 meg CD I give to people I do tech support for. So absolutely I'm involved.

Re: Variety of possible portable software
Seems I came across webfork's first post!
Re: Variety of possible portable software
Indeed. I was really pleased at the time that just a little effort got a response (even though my suggestions weren't accepted). Many other software sites I've tried to get involved with were much less welcoming.guinness wrote:Seems I came across webfork's first post!
The people and community are nice, but the site has also paid me back to some extent for most of my work in terms of making me more effective and productive at the various contract work I've gotten over time. Walking in with a big tool set means you can frequently solve problems faster than other people. Because its portable, you're not modifying the computer you're working on and the various security controls always present don't get in my way.
Its been a good partnership.

It goes to show you weren't deterred in continuing with testing on TPFC!webfork wrote:(even though my suggestions weren't accepted)
It's definitely a unique place on the Internet and I think this is the primary reason people join.webfork wrote:The people and community are nice
Agreed, I'm surprised by the number of IT Admins I've met along the way who install application after application and have never even heard of this site.webfork wrote:The people and community are nice, but the site has also paid me back to some extent for most of my work in terms of making me more effective and productive at the various contract work I've gotten over time. Absolutely and I've tried to be as encouraging to serious users Andrew was here.guinness wrote:It goes to show you weren't deterred in continuing with testing on TPFC!webfork wrote:(even though my suggestions weren't accepted)
I think I understand most admin's position: most users don't want to wonder if the software they put on their computer is going to work according to plan. So putting a program on a computer and NOT having it integrated into the OS in an easy and smooth way (double click on it, send emails with it) doesn't make sense.guinness wrote:I'm surprised by the number of IT Admins I've met along the way who install application after application and have never even heard of this site.
Still, there are advantages: portable software might not be as slick as commercial software, but it won't bog the computer down, constantly running all the time and stacking up registry cruft. Users won't need RAM upgrades and/or a new machine refresh every 2 years. I'm running into that situation with someone I know who thinks a 3 year laptop refresh is impossibly long.
