Radio Ripper

#1 Post by smaragdus »

Radio Ripper is a simple tiny radio player and recorder.

About Radio Ripper:
Radio Ripper is a small app that lets you listen to and record music from tens of thousands of free internet radio stations worldwide, that serve up everything from jazz, rock, classical and country to new age, Bollywood and disco.

Recorded songs can be copied to other devices such as iPods, phones, tablets, etc.
Radio Ripper Features:
- Easy-to-use, nothing to install.
- 100% portable - will run off a USB stick.
- Easily find new radio stations.
- Remember and organize your favorite stations.
- Share favorite stations with friends.
- Recorded song files are properly named and tagged.
- Skips commercials and duplicate tracks.
- Set optional song filters and recording limits for fully automated recording.
- Lets you know when a new version of the app is available.
- No spyware, no adware.
- 100% FREE!

To run Radio Ripper just download the archive ('RadioRipper.zip') and start the executable (RadioRipper.exe). 'RadioRipperSetup.exe' can also be extracted.

Radio Ripper is fully portable, all the data and settings are saved inside program's folder.

VirusTotal results for Radio Ripper version 2.0:
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/17c9 ... 443665095/ - RadioRipperSetup.exe - 1 / 56
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/2c40 ... 443668788/ - RadioRipper.zip - 0 / 56
My antivirus 360 Total Security reported the installer as malware but I am 100% certain this is a false positive.

Wish list:
- An option to minimize Radio Ripper to system tray (I have already suggested this to the developer).

@smaragdus

1. Requires .Net runtime (Win 7 +)
2. Not Stealth:

- RadioRipperLocation.txt in \user\all

3. A search for stations will launch Internet Browser

Nice find, thanks. 8)

I like how RadioRipper (from the same developer as long standing TPFC entry WeatherMate), makes it simple to 'record' (more like 'harvest', in fact) online radio streams -- reminding me somehow of an old abandoned favorite: Screamer Radio...

No information on buffering, though -- I am selective in what I record and should I decide to record a playing song, without buffering all I get is a truncated file...

Also, RadioRipper has a massive memory footprint (180MB+) for such a simple program, which could be due to the fact that it is 32-bit only, even on x64 Windows. On the plus side, DotNET v2 only required (see below).

@I am Baas
3. A search for stations will launch Internet Browser
On my system Search launches my default browser (which is still Firefox).

@Midas
I think you may directly address the developer of Radio Ripper for bugs, issues and feature requests- he is very helpful, I have already contacted him with a few suggestions and he promised he would implement them in future versions of Radio Ripper.

About Screamer Radio, I still have version 0.4.4 and it still works fine. I think that Screamer Radio is not abandoned- there is a new web-site dedicated to Screamer Radio Beta:

https://beta.screamer-radio.com/ - Screamer Radio Beta
https://beta.screamer-radio.com/download/ - Screamer Radio Beta Download

Some time ago I tested the Beta and didn't like it.

    • I only meant abandoned by myself -- and for the same reason, too.

Radio Ripper 3.0 has been released, changes:
Version 3.0, released 5 Oct 2015

- Directly open a stream URL. (Suggested by Bonnie B)
- Minimize to system tray. (Suggested by Asen B)
- Opens .asx playlist files.
- Preview stations from the Organize Favorites window.
- Save recorded songs in station specific folders.
- Added button to open recorded songs folder.
- Import stations by simply dragging a .RRfavorites file on to Radio Ripper.
- Added song information button to status bar.
- Several usability improvements.
There is a undocumented change, in the previous version (Radio Ripper 2.0) Favorites could be accessed from 'Favorites' menu - Play Favorite Station', now Favorites are in 'Stations - Favorites' menu.

Author(s) makes a fairly big deal out of portability and being able to run from a USB drive so we might assume they would be available to feedback on this.

2. Not Stealth:
- RadioRipperLocation.txt in \user\all
This file allows the setup app to pre-select the folder where a Radio Ripper upgrade should be installed. This file can safely be deleted.
