MiniWaller - random wallpaper generator

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

MiniWaller - random wallpaper generator

#1 Post by flatfly »

MiniWaller is a very minimal wallpaper random generator.

Kinda fun to play with.

Appears to be portable - though I did not test it thoroughly.

Download and tested the software:

The download was a binary so:
(a) scan with Anti-virus (AVAST): no threat found.
(b) running the binary does write to the registry under windows 8.1 64bits:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Compatibility Assistant\Store\ pathwhereislocatedthebinary\miniwaller.exe
(c) saving the result: a png image same resolution as my screen (verified with Irfan view), the result was save by the application directly into the application (miniwaller.exe) folder
with numbers as filename. In my case: 1450576669.png.

That does not affect portability / stealth status of the program.

I did not say it affect it's portability / stealth status, did I? :-(
I just reported a test. ;-)
I just don't know why windows triggers a compatibility flag into the registry and it could be interesting to know to avoid junk into the registry base. I wonder what compiler has been used for this binary output, may be it's the key.
I remember some Python binary I made in the past created this flag and I could not sort out with compiler directive how to stop this behavior. I still use Python these day for personal use (PyCharm), mainly mathematics routine. When it comes to some heavy code I am more familiar with C++ and Delphi (Pascal). But this is losing myself in the shuffle.

And YES for me the software is portable. :D

I really liked this but the output function failed for me:

Setup: Win7x86

Steps:
1. Started the program, pressed the spacebar a few times, saw something I liked
2. Pressed "S" to save to PNG file, but the image wasn't the one on the screen

Retested to save as wallpaper via context menu of standard photoviewer of windows (Win 8.1)

download/file.php?mode=view&id=599

Works also under VMWare, Windows 7 Home premium loaded

download/file.php?mode=view&id=600

:-)

Hey, I've also run into this issue. I believe it's simply due to the view area being too small.
A new version was released today and seems to have solved the problem for me.

That makes sense but as I'm unable to resize the window or zoom in / zoom out, the generated image and output are still very different.

Retested today with the same result.

Hello,

Author here. Should be fixed now: The view window is now resizable.

Merry Xmas!

Thanks for stopping by, Sven.

Was anything else changed / features added? miniwaller.exe is nearly doubled in size.

Yes, I switched to a more powerful graphics library so some new effects could (potentially) be added in future releases without rewriting the whole app. And as an unexpected additional benefit, antivirus false positives seem to be gone! So I think the size increase was worth it.

Thanks for clarifying that, looking forward to future releases.

Redownloaded and retested. It works but the program must be at full screen to give a clear indication of the output. When in window'd mode (the default) it shows only part (e.g. doesn't zoom).
