EyeOS

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

EyeOS

#1 Post by lajjal »

I would like to nominate EyeOS for inclusion here. It is open-source, portable, and stealthy if the browser is and when running in a browser that is very fast with java-script like Opera or K-Meleon then it performs very well. I dropped it into the root of USBWebserver and it works with the USBWebserver defaults. The upgrade process is also seemless and ultra simple.

It can found at http://eyeos.org/en/?section=downloads

Yeah, this has actually been posted before. I think that it isn't quite as useful as one might initially think because if used online, then it requires web-access, and if used offline, it defeats the purpose of having it: since all the main features in eyeOS are already availible in more developed packages like OpenOffice and AbiWord.

It's really more for people who don't have portable drives, which I'm assuming everyone here has...

I seems to me that since there are several web server packages here then including something to put on them is not a big leap. Besides, there may very well be a desire to put something on a lan that all can use since it is also groupware. Your reaction seems like you see it as gimmick or toy but qemu is here. Everything doesn't have be serious and web os's are the wave of the future.

I'm sorry if I came off sounding that way, I didn't mean to.

It's just that, even though web os's may indeed be the future of computing, they don't exactly fall under the same category as portable apps. The whole point of a web OS is that you don't need to carry and type of portable media with you to use them, you are supposed to use them from a regular internet connection and a default web browser. All I'm saying is: if you are already planning on carrying around a portable drive, you're probably better off using regular portable software.

I am actually quite interested in web os development, I even have my own copy of eyeOS installed on my site (comp.lococobra.com), I just don't see it as a viable alternative to the rest of the software offered on this site, not yet at least.
