Cobian Backup 8 does not seem portable to me. When making a task list it responds that some folder on the C-drive cannot be found. Of course this happens after uninstalling the program and running it from another location.

With Cobian Backup 7 i do not have that problem, and it seems to behave portable. It is a great backup facility. Of course i am not the expert and did not do any other tests.
cheers,

Cobian Backup 8

Cobian Backup 8 it's a great backup program. I've installed the program and copied it to a new folder on my USB disk. Then I've uninstalled, deleted the cbUninstall.exe file and it works fine.
After, you've only to customize the file \Cobian Backup 8\Settings\cbEngine.ini. I've changed the first line in:

Current list=\PortableApps\Cobian Backup 8\DB\Main List.lst

From author web site: "...The program is now a "green" application. All the files are stored in ini files. The only part that used the registry is the service, which, for obvious reasons must be installed using the registry..."

Cobian Backup

Application name: Cobian Backup

Website: http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm

Date tested: 2008-07-29

Status: Not portable

Reason: Settings dependent on username, so it is not portable when switching between machines with different usernames.

Old thread update:

I really like Cobian so about every 6 months it seems, I go back and see if there's been progress on this, but I think I can safely scratch this one off the list. A portable system has been requested by our site and others, so I'd have to say the author doesn't seem to want to go that route. Also, many of the settings tweaks mentioned in the FAQ revolve around registry modification.

After reading a Cobian Backup update topic (http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/ ... php?t=3520), I see there used to be an entry for Cobian Backup in the Database -- it maybe time to get in there again, because the current version (v11.2.0.582, codename Gravity) is apparently portable...

Softpedia, who rates it 4 stars, still lists Cobian Backup v9.5.0.201 as portable:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-S ... ckup.shtml

I decided to compare the extracted result of the Softpedia Portable with the latest version and found out the only difference were two subfolders (and their respective content), 'DB' and 'Settings', so I just copied them over to the new version; I run PRIMO registry and filesystem checker before and after launching this, but all I got added were a couple of Bags keys... There might still be unforeseen problems, I haven't tested it on a different system -- also, see http://www.cobiansoft.se/forum/yaf_post ... rsion.aspx.
 • http://www.cobiansoft.com/cobianbackup.htm author wrote:Cobian Backup is a multi-threaded program that can be used to schedule and backup your files and directories from their original location to other directories/drives in the same computer or other computer in your network. FTP backup is also supported in both directions (download and upload). Cobian Backup exists in two different versions: application and service. The program uses very few resources and can be running on the background on your system, checking your backup schedule and executing your backups when necessary. Cobian Backup is not an usual backup application: it only copies your files and folders in original or compressed mode to other destination, creating a security copy as a result. So Cobian Backup can be better described as a "Scheduler for security copies". Cobian Backup supports several methods of compression and strong encryption.

I went and tested this out and was very pleased to see that this was the case. Sort of a Christmas present.

It also has a LOT of features for a freeware backup program. Remote access, multiple encryption options, archive splitting, detailed scheduling, command-line options, and a very smooth interface. This is a monster.

I'll go ahead and merge the different threads on this.

Test details
 1. Setup the program
 2. Changed a few settings
 3. Setup a backup and ran it
 4. Moved to another directory on the drive

I checked using RegScanner and Everything for recent file changes. At this stage, it's portable (writes to app directory /Settings) and looks stealth.

I accidentally tested v.9 rather than 11 as Midas did. Anyway, I spent all sorts of time on this so I'll go ahead and add it to the database. It's still an excellent program even if it's not the latest-and-greatest.
