XP compatible software

#1 Post by Midas »

Image

Just an idea I can't really flesh out right now since I'm not using Windows XP on a daily basis.

Given that it is quite common to see "XP compatibility dropped" in lots of programs changelogs, I think it would be useful to have a list XP compatible software (from TPFC and elsewhere).

So feel free to add you suggestions/links to this topic... :)

EDIT: relevant info at the following topic for anyone wanting to keep Windows XP updated (until 2019, at least).
A shortcut way for updating any new XP installation would be a Service Pack, right?
After updating, how to get rid of all the fluff accumulating in '%WINDIR%'? Some solutions after the jump:
Finally, two overviews appropriate for anyone wondering why all the fuss:

According to smaragdus (https://www.portablefreeware.com/index. ... mment28886), ClipDiary v3.9 is the last XP compatible version.

Furthermore, all of the popular top 20 TPFC entries support XP (marked with '' below; HWinfo status undeclared).

PortableApps.com entries notify people of when an OS becomes incompatible

I have made a list of their software which requires Vista or higher. The 2 without version numbers is because there was no xp support in PA format at the time of release

AquaSnap v1.18.2
Avidemux
Blender v2.76b
DB Browser For SQLite v3.9.0
FileZilla v3.9.0.2
Google Chrome 50
gPodder v3.9.2
HexChat
Kitty v0.67.3.2
Marble v1.9.1
Mnemosyne v2.3.6
Sigil v0.8.0
Stellarium v0.14.0

@Midas

Yes that is correct. I took the information from the entries on the PA website but was lazy to research the previous version which still supports xp

So i have done some research for the ones that do support xp

AquaSnap v1.17.1
Avidemux v2.6.10 (No PA format)
Blender v2.76
DB Browser For SQLite v3.4.0
FileZilla v3.9.0.1
Google Chrome 49
gPodder v3.9.1
HexChat v2.9.4 (No PA format)
KiTTY v0.67.3.1
Marble v1.9.0
Mnemosyne v2.3.5
Sigil v0.7.4
Stellarium v0.13.3

Another one bites the dust

SysInternals Process Monitor Portable v3.32

http://portableapps.com/news/2017-02-19 ... 2-released
"Note that this release drops support for Windows XP"

Last working version in XP is v3.31

Nowadays, Sysinternals' utilities all come with a blanket warning about running ONLY under Windows Vista and higher.

However, MS dire warning notwithstanding, SOME of those utilities will still run happily under good ole win XP...

The following list (executable|version#|PE signing date|remark) includes the latest versions found to be running fine under Win XP SP3
(tested on a ThinkPad R61i 32-bit machine, FWIW):

Code: Select all

Autoruns 13.7  30/01/2017
Contig   1.8   27/05/2016
PortMon  3.03  14/01/2012
ProcExp  16.20 17/11/2016
ProcMon  3.20  26/05/2015 (3.32 version guaranteed to crash XP with a BSOD !)
SigCheck 2.30  30/10/2015 (2.40 and higher versions guaranteed to crash XP with a BSOD !)
Strings  2.52  18/06/2013
TCPview  3.05  25/07/2011
Whois    1.14  12/06/2016
[/size]
The above is a non-exhaustive list, covering some of Mark Russinovich's tools I use most.
Anyone looking for one of these older XP-friendly versions ? Just drop me a line.

Wouldn't it be good if someone designed a website with a database of program versions and their requirements including filters

It would be a big project to manage i suppose. Community driven would help alot

Well, a little bird reminded me about one of those obscure bbs,

founded way back when in the antediluvian computing era (circa 2004, perchance?),

but whose very name eludes me right now... :?

Ah yes! I do recall after all :
Spoiler!
TPFC ...;-)
