Places - static program launcher

#1 Post by webfork »

Every once in a while I come across a program so simple, I'm a little angry that I didn't think of it myself. This is a simple launcher program that lets you add and group programs like a second desktop, but it always stays the way you left it.
Everything stays in its place: icons will always stay in the same position, where you once placed them. No sorting, no re-ordering, no changes if the resolution of the screen changes. Instead, the icons are scaled accordingly to the screen resolution. You will always find your icons at the same position with a quick mouse click. Therefore the name "Places".
The introductory video is excellent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onOWVSTzzqM

Status: Not portable. I didn't test it, the home page is quite clear about where settings are saved (AppData)

Requirements: You'll see mention of a graphics card but I tested without one and it worked fine.

Nice idea indeed. I am always puzzled by why Microsoft thinks it's a good idea to mess up the desktop without at least providing an option to turn it off, which is why I don't use it.

I think there's already a somewhat similar program in the database -- QuickWayToFolders (https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1630) -- although I fully agree Places seems more focused on one function and an easier concept to grasp...

Good add -- I didn't make that connection.
