I think the start button thing was symptomatic problem rather than a direct one. It represented a larger issue of Microsoft having a forward-thinking mobile device / phone strategy. The inability to reconcile the old with the new is telling. Macs used to run everything out of what was effectively a "start" button (in the top right corner) but nobody complained about the transition to OS X.

So yeah the outstanding issue of no effective mobile strategy despite attempt after attempt will remain my complaint. :)

  • Android has 99% of my mobile needs solved. What I do need from Microsoft is to keep my lap/desktop running as it should: smooth, easy, and predictable -- and please refrain from downgrading my hardware on a whim. :P

Some rumors:

The next big update to Windows 8.1 will come in September.

Windows 9 will contain some kind of a next generation Modern UI.

Microsoft is working on a prototype operating system called Windows Cloud that requires an Internet connection for full functionality. Competitor to Chrome OS?

Are we being forced once again to move to Windows 8? I won't do it! In fact, if Microsoft continues this trend, I'll ditch Windows products for ever. Linux seems more and more like a viable option for me.

Not yet. As the page says, the next year Windows 7 will merely move to extended support, which mainly means that non-security updates will stop. Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 in the year 2020.

Yep, don't freak out. If its anything like WinXP, Win7 will still get security updates maybe until Windows 10 comes around.

Well it's not really "cancelled". The updates are still coming out just in the same way its always been, through windows update and without much fanfare. They plan to keep updating more frequently and not do anymore of those "update 1" or "service pack" junk. If i'm reading things right...

Reminds me of how Google Chrome updates in the background without people noticing and Firefox trying to do the same thing instead of having each version seen as some sort of big event like in the past.

FYI, I bought some Microsoft shares. I believe Windows Threshold will do much better than Windows 8. (It wouldn't even be hard... )
