It's much easier (on the mind) to assume that every app you're using has privacy issues and adapt your actions accordingly than to wake up reading articles like this...
Yeah me too. I hadn't tested it on Windows because it's closed-source but they have some of the best usability I've seen on a mobile device. Sadly, they didn't seem to keep up with older devices like mine as it crashes quite a bit.

I accidentally came across your post and only after having read it I realized it was you who posted it... I couldn't have written that concept better myself even if tried!
I personally use http://www.apkpure.com/ that seems to work quite fine to download .apk files directly to the lap/desktop.
A few months back I used http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ but I oftentimes noticed that some apps aren't updated and using the "request newer version" feature is slow and doesn't always provide best results.

I can confirm your observation about Evozi APK Downloader -- I only mentioned it because it was the original APK downloader service, issued from the folds of the mythic XDA-Devs forums...
