I guess Skype is trying to auto-update (but fails because it's not installed).

In any case, %TEMP% is considered an official area for temporary files and therefore saving files there wouldn't make Skype Portable non-stealth: http://www.portablefreeware.com/faq.php#stealth

The bug mentioned above with the blank directory left behind was fixed months ago. In the last regshot I did, Skype Portable was completely clean. If you see something else, please file a complete bug report in the PortableApps.com forums.

Note that if you leave Skype running and shut down Windows, Windows will kill the processes out of order and cause Skype to leave registry keys behind. You can easily work around this by properly closing Skype before rebooting or shutting down. The PortableApps.com Platform can do this automatically for all your apps.

That's insane. But does the reboot process zap them?

Lame.

Hmmm... I'd probably leave the BagMRU keys alone. I don't know about the PropertyStore ones. Maybe if the PortableApps wrapper isn't doing it, it's because they shouldn't be deleted? *shrug*

Just a note that Skype 7 has revamped their user interface to be more touch-friendly. Unfortunately, it has received mostly negative feedback:

I'm in agreement with most of the users in that thread.

Also, in the chat window, there is quite a large ad banner at the top now:

Interesting ... two things come to mind:
  • Skype is the forefront of Microsoft's collaboration strategy. It's very surprising to me that they went the adware route.
  • Will PA take it off their site if they insist on including an ad banner?

Thanks for the link. I wouldn't have found the Compact Chat View option otherwise. :)

For me the new UI is okay. It's worse than the Skype 6 UI, but it could easily be even worse.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore\
1. Firewall Rules

If you do not allow Skype, how do you want the application to make the connection to the Skype server?

2. BagMRU

It is a Windows "database" of folders.

3. Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore

Windows record of the volume level

None of the above registry entries has any bearing on portability.

And should anyone be fed up enough with Skype to the point of wanting Messenger back, something interesting lies yonder... :)
