MobileMeter is a system monitoring utility designed for laptop PCs. It displays the CPU clock speed and temperate, battery charge/discharge rate and hard disk temperature.
Note: The application web page is in Japanese, but an English translation is archived.

Discovered this following __philippe's recommendation; the download link from webpage seems to be working now. This tiny app absolutely rocks -- I just wish that background color was user customizable...

For when tiny Windows icon in the taskbar isn't enough to explain your laptop's status. Great for watching power usage on laptops that claim to have optimization when on battery power. Watching frequency and temperature levels may help you test such features in real-time.
Not the best looking software and temperatures are listed in Celsius but probably the most portable of the available battery analysis tools, requiring no additional DLL downloads.

When I run this program, it wanted to create a executable file in windows\system32 folder which I blocked.
