Forum Spam List Checker

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Forum Spam List Checker

#1 Post by Gunner »

Just put this app together. Queries user info (IP, Name, Email) against 3 Forum Spammer Databases and returns the number of times info was found

Check it out: http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1985

The app works very fast, kinda too fast for the status bar messages to be read.
Is there any way to have a "task completed" or "nothing in database" type status bar message if nothing found?
I swear I thought the program wasnt doing anything :)

Also, how would a noob like me go about getting a spammer's IP address?
I know there is a proly a portable on this site but I have not much messed around
with these type apps before.

Too fast :-) That is one of the reasons I use assembly.... I could add a 1 second pause between each service query. I will add "Task Completed" and or "nothing found"... The app is for anyone that can see a users info... Admin/Moderator of Message Boards, Guest Books, Blogs etc...

Excellent addition, maybe this is a program for the Forum Mods to test!

Assembly speed is a myth.
It is very fast, but in many cases (this included) it's not noticeably faster than supposedly slow languages.
Here the bottleneck is internet connection, not application logic and using assembly for such app just makes it more expensive to write, less portable and less maintainable.
If you chose asm as a training, write algorithms because it's the only place when using it makes sense.

I spent far too much time overoptimising all my early programs. Now if I'm to modify any of my early apps, I usually totally rewrite them, because I prefer to have them done right.

I don't have access to spammer IP addresses here on PFW so I don't really have a way to effectively test this.

I did find a bug under WinXP SP3
  • 1. Used garbage data (123.123.123.123, name: test, email: test@test.com)
    2. Clicked Search
Defect: Crash. Data from Windows error msg:

Edit: Gunner sent me a fixed version. I'll let him post a link to the updated version, but its important to note I've never had a fix come back that fast in the ~300 bug reports I've done.

If you say the updated version works, I will change the version number and post the update in a little while, adding geolocation for the IP to display a flag of the country the IP is from.
As for the fix... As soon as a bug is reported, I will fix it as soon as I can :D working software is important!

Okay no (sigh) I totally have poster IP addresses. I'll retest this program the next week or so.

Eh, the IP Info server I was using, changed their server around, so the IP Country info and flags does not work ATM... I was in the middle of a rewrite when I found this out... so all will be well in the next version.
