Anyone got this to work? Settings are still getting written to the registry, from what I see here.

Settings are written to the X-WinMerge_2.6.0\User\WinMerge\WinMerge.reg file.

Just tested it again. I have problems getting it to remember the settings under both Win2K and XP. For example, if I disable splash screen and restart, that option is reset to default.

In addition, under XP, when I quit the application, the window disappears, but WinMerge.exe and X-WinMerge.exe continue to exist under Task Manager until I explicitly kill WinMerge.exe.

That is working for me, but

i have the same problem.
And found a lot settings written to the registry.

I'have not the problem.
In the X-WinMerge_2.6.0\User\WinMerge\WinMerge.reg file, ligne 77 I have:
"DisableSplash"=dword:00000001

I have not the process in the task manager when I close the application.

Could it be that because i have to kill the WinMergeU.exe,
the registry entries remain, and dont get cleaned up?

regshot says me:
Keys added:18
Values added:215
Values Changed:5
they are (nearly) all under:
HKU\S-1-5-21-484763869-1275210071-839522115-1003\Software\Thingamahoochie

Alternatively there is also a modified version of WinMerge with 3 pane compare

https://winmergejp.bitbucket.io/

the site is in Japanese but the program is in English, portability is same as standard WinMerge

Very interesting. The 3-pane screenshots look pretty good, bringing the program up to Meld (http://meldmerge.org/). Does it do 3 pane directory checks? I'm not sure I need that functionality but it sounds cool. :)

The program does appear to support WinMerge Portable, though of course all in Japanese right now:
WinMerge Portable

WinMerge Portable has joined as a member of PortableApps, but WinMerge Japanese version becomes Portable version by replacing the file of WinMerge Portable with that of WinMerge Japanese version.
Exchange method

Download WinMerge Portable from http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/ ... e_portable and install it.
Rename the [ PortableApps folder \ WinMergePortable \ App \ WinMerge] folder.
Expand the Zip version (winmerge-xx-jp-x-exe.zip etc.) and copy the expanded [WinMerge] folder to the [ PortableApps folder \ WinMergePortable \ App \] folder.

it supports 3 File/Folder :), i used the old version a lot and often had the need for a 3 way compare, since i found this one it works without problems and it's really handy

3-way comparison is available in the "official" WinMerge too.
