This software appears to have gone payware. If you have a copy of the last free version 2.4, please post. Note very similar to this one added to official entry.

Softpedia says it has the portable version of 2.4 available for download.

Supposedly there is also a 2.4.1 out there (according to Google), but this isn't mentioned on the company's own archived changelog. Softonic claims to have that one for download from their servers, if anyone wants to pay $3 in their quest for freeware.

And if anyone is trying to find the portable download of the most current but non-free version, the link seems to be a little hidden (not available from the "Download" button, for example). It's at http://www.easyduplicatefinder.com/down ... table.html

@Webfork, yes I have that version, been using it for several months.

I think I might have stripped it down and UPX'd it though, so I'll dig around and see if I still have the original zip download.

@Onesimus Prime, I do have that *v 2-4-1-setup* file, but I saw comments on another venue reporting that version is both cripple-ware and nag-ware to upgrade to Pay version, so I never bothered to unpack it.

I don't know exactly what changes are between v2.4 and v2.4.1 but I found this update.

Have to check in the About window to see the current version

According to a scan, the file is clean.

This thread contains discussion about Easy Duplicate Finder and its transition to payware. According to grannyGeek's post, Easy Duplicate Finder 2.4.1 does exist but is nagware.

@rturo's link wasn't malicious, just useless.

I would always "err on the side of caution when it comes to downloading from 3rd party download sites."

Thank you system for your input. As a result, I restored the link. I, too, try to err on the side of caution. I will add this scanning step to my evaluation process.

For what it is worth, you may see VirusTotal's results here.

I think your caution is warranted based on the existence of 0-day viruses that might not show up in a virus scanner. Links by users with 3 or fewer posts should always be suspect. That said, its important we don't step on anyone just starting out. Part of the reason I'm such a frequent poster here now is in the early stages I was given a lot of rope so this should be done carefully.

Possible ways to do this without censoring anyone:
  • Just edit the post with a moderator note about exercising caution.
  • A little more direct route: is modifying the link with something a visitor (if they are inclined) can remove and still download. For example, in one thread from last month, I renamed the link with "999" placed in the middle. Visitors could still follow that link if they wanted to, but makes it *very* clear the link is suspect.
  • Some sites have an automatic intermediary page that lets them know when they first click on a forum link that it might be dangerous. I doubt Andrew wants to go that far with it, but its an idea.
