Just the other day me and my friend struggled to exchange a large file between two laptops sitting right next to each other. Finally we found a flash drive. This program would have saved me a lot of time. Additionally, if I was to write down a list of what I wanted in a LAN messaging client, this would check off all the boxes: instant messaging, public key encryption (AES encryption with RSA as the key exchange), broadcast messages, file transfer, ability to organize contacts, and logging. Best of all it's serverless and cross-platform (Mac/Linux) with no feature-limits on the non-Windows versions.

Heh - yeah except that one. If it turns out to be worth the time, I'll talk to the dev and see if I can encourage that in a future version.

I create a 'proof of concept' UDP chat client the other day, so I have the up most respect for a developer who can create something on this scale.

I'm downloading the Portable version to test, but would be great (if feasible) that the developer create a Portable application natively.

Note that we have an existing program in the database by that name so if this program is submitted, one or both should get a name like "Madhavan Lan Messenger" or "Qualia Lan Messenger".

I realized that -- for all the nice programs out there to add security to existing IM networks, this program was a step ahead by ignoring a centralized network. Also great for quickly and easily transferring files over a LAN.

I went with the PortableApps version because, although there's supposedly native portability via the /noconfig argument, I couldn't seem to get this to work properly.

Needing to send a very large file on one machine to another over the local network, I tested out Lan Messenger Portable on Win10 with very lenient firewall settings (all network profiles, allow edge transversal) and unfortunately still wasn't able to connect. There may well have been a block on the router-level, but I didn't have access to the device.

Anyway, through the course of testing, I also wanted to note that the only actively-developed LAN messaging tool is BeeBEEP. So to the extent that older software tends to be a security risk, that's something to be aware of.
