Winsnap - Screen capture utility

Submit portable freeware that you find here. It helps if you include information like description, extraction instruction, Unicode support, whether it writes to the registry, and so on.

Winsnap - Screen capture utility

#1 Post by Easybeat »

[Mod Note: the present is the official forum topic for the last freeware version of WinSnap; https://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1042]

Winsnap is a very small (132kb) screen capture utility that can be downloaded as an executable. For such a small size there are an excellent amount of features.

http://www.ntwind.com/software/winsnap.html?

Quote from the website:-
WinSnap is a small enhancement utility for taking and editing screenshots. It can easily capture windows of non-rectangular form with the background of your choice, automatically perform simple canvas transformations and coloring effects, add professional smoothing shadows in Photoshop style and more. Also, WinSnap supports variety of image formats and provides advanced auto-save features.

Did you run the install package or the binary one? I could not fnd any changes.

Also some other programs write to the registry and are deemed portable so what exactly did it write?

The program saves the settings to the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alexander Avdonin\WinSnap\1.1
(and also HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alexander Avdonin\WinSnap\1.1)

Since v1.1.8, there is also a portable edition available for download:

Thanks for your interest

Portable Edition uses only one Run key in HKCU. Perhaps I'll change this soon.

Sorry! My stupid mistake. I accidentally downloaded the non-portable versions aka "WinSnap binaries". I have posted WinSnap to the database.

Ah ha! So you do make mistakes! Well so much for an asian Jesus. ;)

I used this app and while I'm not as fond of it as I am FastStone Capture, it certainly does a great job. I'd be a lot more interested in a portable TaskSwitchXP Pro though. :)

Ha ha! That seems like a good tagline that I might adopt:

"I am no Asian Jesus"

Really tickles me! :D

I screw up all the time, especially when I am sleep-deprived, and lately, that has been happening a lot...

Very old topic update: as noted in the database entry, the last freeware version of WinSnap is v1.1.10 released 2007-01-30.

Funily enough, while it was once valid, if you try to download this WinSnap version from the homepage (e.g., www.ntwind.com/download/WinSnap_1.1.10-portable.zip) you'll get served v3.5.7 instead, which is exactly the same last portable version advertised at Softpedia.

An alternative download link has been posted in the database entry, after the one from Archive.org stopped working.

Thanks for all that digging. That is not a quickie, 2 minute web search right there.

Part of the credit goes to user DzejPy (www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1042#comment29289) for spotting and solving the download issue.

I updated that entry, but instead of linking to the alternative codecpack.co site like we are now, we might want to mirror the app on TPFC servers instead.
is it stealth? ;)
