ClickMonitorDDC (screen tweaking utility)

ClickMonitorDDC (https://clickmonitorddc.bplaced.net/) is a nifty portable tray utility to interactively adjust your screen settings (brightness and contrast) while also changing/muting your system sound level. Settings are saved to a 'ClickMonitorDDC.xml' file inside the program's folder.
https://clickmonitorddc.bplaced.net/ wrote:Simply click the notification icon in the taskbar tray area to adjust brightness or contrast, much more comfortable and faster than manually messing around with monitor-buttons. The notification icon informs you about the monitor values, you simply look at the icon to check if the wanted values are already set.

I have a direct use for this on a locked-down computer whose screens are set WAY too bright. Awesome.

Why this program is important:

A brightness tool like this can saves time and money but if you don't have something built into your system the process for turning down the brightness is really tedious. I didn't realize how spoiled I was to have something built right into the keyboard but not every computer has this as I found out this week. In fairness, MOST systems have a system for handling this but in those rare situations where you can't, this might help out.

Just for reference, here's the really tedious manual process (on Win7):
  1. Navigate to the control panel - power options - edit plan settings
  2. Change the "plugged in" brightness a little, click save. If that's not quite what you wanted, you have to re-click the Change plan settings and do this again and again.

Unfortunately this program launches and goes into memory but gives an error message that it can't detect the screen, probably because it's inside a VMware image.

This program is great, but there doesn't seem to be a way to save the current brightness/display settings, to be able to revert back to them. The current values have to be noted and then manually reverted after a session, which is a bit inconvenient and potentially dangerous for any kind of graphic work. One could set-up hotkeys or command-line arguments (as the readme explains) for a particular configuration, but the glaring absence of a "reset"-type button is rather odd.

Earlier, I wanted to point to DiMXSoft Desktop Lighter as an alternative, but had trouble locating it -- not surprising, since the website (dimxsoft.com) is AWOL... :(

Desktop Lighter isn't really portable but it has been yaPed, as discussed in viewtopic.php?p=52413#p52413 and following (BTW, it seems this is the one that got away, tproli ).

Desktop Lighter's Softpedia review and download is available at www.softpedia.com /get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/Desktop-Lighter.shtml.

Version 6.3 is out. There have been a remarkable number of changes since this was first discussed. Wow.

So I've added ClickMonitorDDC to the database (https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=2982) but before you vote, please note that I don't actually know if it's portable. I realized that the machine I used to write up the program description and other details can't actually run the program as it's under a virtualization layer. I will verify in the days ahead.

Update: I've verified this as portable, writes to ClickMonitorDDC.xml. Please vote.

The settings menu is a little odd and many settings require going through the readme file to enter effectively, but the ability to hover over the volume and brightness in your taskbar and roll the moue wheel to change your audio volume or screen brightness is fantastic. You can even middle-click to jump between two values (usually mute / standard volume and dark / standard brightness. I'm really kicking myself for not exploring this further.

This is actually particularly useful, looking over its features, since it can set per-application and even fullscreen-exclusive settings which could be used for specialized tasks such as image editing or video viewing. Very nice find.

Agreed -- there's a lot going on under the hood with this one.

Yeah I definitely did that in the wrong order.

Reason for quoting was not your posts' order but that particular case.
I just "upped" for attention forum topics of some down-voted entries.
