v2.0.0.0 is now out in stable, after almost 10 long years, and it's still the best Hex editor!

Seconding Special's praise for HxD 2.0

HxD was remarkably useful yet in its former v1.1.7 incarnation.
Ten years on, the v2.0 release, resurrected from limbo, Phoenix-like,
offers an amazing list of new features and enhancements, such as:

• New Data Inspector
• New Unicode support
• Enhanced Search window
• …

This has been flagged as malware by AVG and other programs.

AdrianK_IT on 2012-05-05 13:30

This is one of the NirSoft utilities, and trustworthy. It is flagged as malware as it clearly can be used for malicious reasons ie extract passwords for nefarious purposes. However, it can also be used for good reasons ie extract passwords for recovery purposes etc!
I have learnt to temporarily disable 'real time protection' in AV software when downloading/moving/using these utilities.
I also use them as a simple test of AV software effectiveness; if it doesn't pick up these utilities as potentially malicious, then the AV software is clearly useless!

anyone got this working together with firefox portable? i read that it is possible when pointing to the profile folder but it just fails here.

This entry needed a desperate clean-up and update. I've replaced the pak128 download link with the actual game and added a note about the graphics paks. The rest of the entry has been updated appropriately.

aazard on 2020-11-12 00:46

The CURRENT (2020-11-12) "offline" aka portable version instrustions:

Lots of forum searching to find this "stand-alone/offline portable install method note".

The "complete" stand-alone offline version is found here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/simutrans/files/Simutrans%20complete/102-2-2/

Optional to reduce size:

Downloading the smallest "graphics pak" which is: "Pak32 Comic" found here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/simutrans/files/pak32.comic/pak32.comic%20for%20102-0/

THEN renamE the folder from "pak32" to "pak" and delete/replace the original.

Remove all languages/fonts but the main one you speak/read (example: English for me with font "Prop-Latin1.bdf")

This will result in SMALLEST SIZE, current graphics game: unzipped, file "fixed" and UPX'ed (lzma) compressed size: 4.19mb

aazard on 2020-11-12 00:49

@ 4.19mb in on drive size; this is the most current (still being updated) simcity/open TTD like game that is will run on ANY PC current enough to have a USB port.

*Note: as you might see from many of my posts I have a fever for "best bang per kb" in portable apps. Can we make lists here in forums?

Pax on 2019-04-27 15:53

Update: I installed the latest version (2.0) a few days ago: had previously been working with v1.94 (on Linux and previously on Win7). Was able to test both versions on Windows 10 only (Oct/2018 update) - my Linux laptop is being replaced.

Turns out both versions need .NET Framework. When running v2.0, it didn't notify me that .NET was missing. When I tried to access a drive, it stalled - I 'forced closed' the app.

Running v1.94 will notify you of missing .NET Framework and correctly download and install it. After I did this, v2.0 ran without problems.

On the same directory, v2.0 created a 54mb html file and was noticeably slower generating it. My browsers (Firefox and Brave) took a long while to parse and display. Built-in search was also very slow.

v1.94 (on the same directory), created a 1mb file. Much smaller. Parsed instantly on FF and Brave. Search/Filter was snappy.

Maybe this is an isolated incident. I'm on Windows (temporarily) for the first time in a few years: went through updates, tried to secure for privacy, installed a few programs, etc...

Bottom line: If v2.0 isn't working well for you, v1.94 works great.

Update on my comment of 2019-04-27 regarding Snap2HTML on Linux/WINE.

Found a great Linux solution named: LinuxDir2HTML (github/homeisfar)

It's a command-line only python (3.6+) script that's only 11kb in size. It uses the same HTML template as Snap2HTML. I've been testing it on large directories with all manner of fileNaming. It's been great so far.

Honestly, Snap2HTML was the only program I needed WINE for. It was that valuable to me. Finding this python script reduces any overhead (plus all the .NET components) and gives me some future-proofing.

Version 1.92 of Snap2HTML was the only thing that worked for me on Linux and (last time I checked) wasn't available online anymore. I had it archived in multiple places. LinuxDir2HTML (homeisfar) answered the call.
