Windows 8 Latest News

#1 Post by Magibon »

This is where all discussions relating to Microsoft's new Windows (8) will go.

Although Microsoft has been sharing Windows 8 test builds with trusted partners for several months, us mere mortals had to wait until early April to get a taste of Windows 8. However, the flood gates seem to have opened, and we have another leak on our hands.

April 27, 2011: Windows 8 Build 7955 (6.2.7955.0). This build is a lot newer than the earlier build. If I am not mistaken, it is the final build of the Milestone 2 (M2) tree. According to the notes provided by the releaser,

Code: Select all

You can unlock the following:
Ribbon UI
Application Folder (now working, in 7850 it was broken)
Full DWM (hideblur)
The following requires the ”red pill”:
Webcam
Login (that ugly guy with ctrl+alt+del, the fishy wallpaper, pattern login)
TaskUI (new taskmanager)
PDF Reader
Immersive Browser
At the moment Windows 8 M2 is available for download only if you're a Microsoft partner and the size is approximately 2.47GB (2,657,079,296 bytes).

"M" stands for Milestone. Which are builds before beta.
These builds usually do not contain much changes/visual differences.

hi, have you really download it? what's the interface?
I see some leaked interface photo (http://www.itrumor.com/some-new-features-in-windows-8/), I can't see great improvement in windows 8.
And according to my experience, Microsoft always released one poor product after one successful product, for example:

Win XP is cool, Vista is failure, then Windows 7, now ... Windows 8?

I'd like if you stopped discussing about piracy here.

I have to agree. This site is focused on legally obtained and licensed software. Even though companies may leak their own software to draw interest, the legal standing of this type of thing is at best vague.

Not that discussing this is somehow a crime, but actually listing the torrents (and a pretty good idea of how to find them) is definitely better left to other sites. I don't think the hosting company behind PFWC will look kindly on this.

I'd prefer not to delete the thread. We will discuss Windows 8 eventually, I'd be glad to get some going on about it now. The important line (for me) not to cross is making note of ways to get the pirated software itself or endorse a specific file to get off file sharing networks.

If you're not sure if you should post something in the future, post it anyhow and we'll deal with it. I'd rather have to debate removing stuff than have less content here on the site. :)

k.. although i would like to steer clear of disciplinary actions. :)

the reason i thought it was ok to post info. regarding Windows 8:
- it's available via private FTPs if you're a M$ Partner. (MSDN, etc).
- Windows 8 is free to try for 30 days.
- i do not provide or discuss anything related to hacking, cracking, or how to bypass activation.

But i'll keep in mind TPFC's strict format.

That particular torrent is bypassing the way in which Microsoft chooses to distribute their software. If you want to say that doesn't quite count as piracy, maybe you're right, but I think the site should avoid that slippery slope.

Additionally, if there are legal routes to get this (and probably faster than a torrent if its coming off Microsoft's servers) why did you link to the torrent?

Asking you not to post information on recommended torrents of tenuous legal standing is strict?

IMO, posting information is OK to some extent, but publishing the name of the torrent is too much. Anyone can use Google after that.

I'm more interested in what is up and coming in the next Windows Series and not downloading unofficial releases. I just saw on Ghacks >> http://www.ghacks.net/2011/04/28/window ... t-roaming/ about Roaming Profiles, even though this isn't a new concept (Opera Sync) it does pose the question of whether there might be implications of accessing your account on a rouge machine? I suppose more details will be revealed at a later date.

I just saw an article on MakeUseOf.com which is proposing 23 potential new & revamped features in Windows 8 - http://gizmodo.com/5803954/windows-8-pr ... know-about

What stands out for me is Portable Workspaces as I would like to know what the security implications might be and what is left behind on the host machine.

Agreed. However, assuming that actually goes into Windows 8, the portable OS and facial recognition are the most exciting thing on the list. But PDF and ISO support? Really? Touchscreen capabilities and WinFS? They've been trying to do those for like 7 years now. There was a Windows tablet long before the iPad, but it was very hard to use and didn't catch on for a reason.

Also, instead of fixing the problem of runaway registry cruft, they just create a shortcut to restoring your system to an earlier stage?

And more ribbons? Really?
