Last free IcoFX

#1 Post by webfork »

Alert user laudrepay just figured out that IcoFX went payware.

Fortunately its at the top of the list over at LastFreeware

http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware ... html#IcoFX

Question is whether or not 321download.com is a reliable/safe download site. I'm reasonably sure we've used it before for other entries but just want to be sure.

@webfork
I no longer have the zip file

But I think I have the exe version you want

so if you download a matching MD5 you should be ok

IcoFX.exe by Attila Kovrig
Version: 1.6.4.0
MD5 83431F88976D77A90429EFC128FBE1E0

(hmm? thinks... would be good if a hash of the latest versions were held on the DB)

Hope that helps

Filehippo has the old version 1.6.4: http://filehippo.com/download_icofx/6890/
(hmm? thinks... would be good if a hash of the latest versions were held on the DB)
That's something to think about, full archive hash would be nice.

Well, my copy of IcoFX.exe has the following information:

File version: 1.6.4.0
MD5 hash: 399CAB3C5EB32165AAC21436F8705C21
Timestamp: 17 November 2008

Note the different hash.

Mine matches NickR's. And that's the one bundled in IcoFX Portable 1.6.4.

OK, I have compared them.

Mine

Size: 2 764 288 bytes
MD5: 399CAB3C5EB32165AAC21436F8705C21
Date: 17 November 2008

The one in IcoFX Portable

Size: 2 764 800 bytes
MD5: 83431F88976D77A90429EFC128FBE1E0
Date: 18 November 2008

So I have a slightly older build. I'll update it.

If anyone is interested, my copy is available here.

Anyone have the ZIP version? Both FileHippo and Lupo's site have the EXE version.

By way of general policy, I want to select mirror sites that carry two criterion:
  • 1. A reputation of some kind and a no spyware/adware/etc. policy (hence my question about the 321download.com site).
    2. The ability to handle some heavy bandwidth (and unlikely to get dDOS'd)
That said, I'm not saying Lupo site doesn't have serious bandwidth or that it doesn't have a good reputation. I just know that FileHippo has a lot of servers spread out over a large area (correct me if I'm wrong on any point here). Lupo however could (if he wants to) switch over to the ZIP version whereas I don't know how to get in touch w/ the FileHippo people.

Here's my copy of icofxpe.zip.

It's dated 21 November 2008 and the executable within matches NickR's hash.

I think my server offers a good bandwidth, have you speed problems from somewhere?

Anyway all my apps are packaged as 7-Zip self-extracting EXE, not the official EXE/Setup versions.. so you need only to download and extract them  ..is there a reason to prefer ZIP packages? because I decided my solution to use 7z compression, that is better than zip compression..

Do you have permission to repackage IcoFX and other freeware apps in another package? Because without permission (either directly from the publisher or explicitly stated in the EULA), it's illegal to repackage software.

I directly contacted authors of IcoFX and other apps to repackage and distribute them.

Yep. From the license:
5. All redistributions of the Software's files must be in their original, unmodified form. Distributions of modified versions of the files is not permitted without express written permission of the Author.
Lupo73 wrote:I think my server offers a good bandwidth, have you speed problems from somewhere?
No but I'm guessing your server doesn't match the power behind it that download services like softpedia, filehippo, etc. have. Again, if I'm off on that, let me know.
Lupo73 wrote:is there a reason to prefer ZIP packages? because I decided my solution to use 7z compression, that is better than zip compression.
Usually. 7-zip's LZMA algorithm is most adapted for large amounts of similar data. So while for lots of text documents or database files it has a dramatic advantage, other files its about the same as ZIP.

I'd like to keep the same file that IcoFX was distributing just for consistency, but if there was a strong size difference, obviously what you have now is preferable.
