Nice neat utility. I can keep an eye on the CPU usage and see if it seems excessive.

FreeOTFE, named for "on-the-fly disk encryption" creates one or more encrypted virtual disks using numerous available encryption algorithms (e.g. AES, Twofish, Serpent, and many more), and can be used to encrypt entire partitions. A separate application that doesn't require administrative rights called FreeOTFE Explorer is also available from the same site, using an Explorer-like interface (see version comparison).
64-bit users: FreeOTFE Explorer is functional, but Windows 7 64-bit users cannot use FreeOTFE as the drivers are unsigned.
Note: On startup, you will receive a message asking you to use portable mode drivers to start the virtual disk drivers (you need administrator rights to do this, otherwise the menu item will be grayed out). When you shutdown the program, you will also be given the option to stop the virtual disk drivers.
Note: Site offline -- linking to Sourceforge mirror.

Peter202: for reasons I can get into in the forums, I still recommend TrueCrypt despite issues mentioned in the press. Still for most people, FreeOTFE is more than adequate.

@webfork What exactly is the danger of using TrueCrypt? I need encryption software mostly to create a virtual volume from which i want to run my portable applications.

fSekrit is a notepad that encrypts saved information in self-contained executable (.EXE) files. Created files don't need fSekrit and can be access by simply double-clicking the item and entering the correct password.
Uses the widely recognized 256-bit AES encryption and unencrypted data is never saved to disk, making it even more secure.
Functional in 64-bit.

- fixed: long-standing bug where failing to save changes when closing fSekrit with a modified document would cause fSekrit to exit, rather than notifying of error and let user attempt to save again. - fixed: saves are *finally* done properly, by saving to a temporary file and replacing the current file only when all the file writing business is done. - added: font selection dialog, no longer do you need to much around with the registry to set another default font. The font is still not stored in your document, though, and is single global per-user registry setting. - added: "portable" mode, which (for now) means it will not use %TEMP% to store it's temporary editor executable, but instead store it in the same folder as the opened document. Registry is still used for font selection, though! To enabel this feature, create a file called "fSekrit.portable" in the same folder as the document you want to function in portable mode. - added: URLs are now recognized and turned into hyperlinks. - fixed: Read-only notes should be a lot more sane - changed from confusing "make read-only" that half-worked to "Save As Read-only" that works :) - fixed: Win9x and NT4 support has been broken since version 1.35. Release builds are now done with an older compiler toolchain, and 9x/NT4 support is back :) |

I found that the version of the zip for fsekrit on the waybackmachine for 2015 is valid at 49kbytes size, the some in later snapshots are only 10kbytes and do not work.

@rogerthedodger: you can download the PortableApps.com package. Extract or install it, the contents of the APP folder is all you need, delete the rest. After the first launching of IcoFX.exe the configuration files will be created

The busy XP screenshot doesn't do the app justice. Worthwhile app for icon creation and extraction. Main limitation of this version is the lack of 512px+ size support, which OSX and now Windows 10 support. |

Why should anyone use the portable version of this utility? |
PStart is an easy-to-use system tray program launcher with a hierarchical list of menus for launching applications and documents, much like the Windows "Start" menu. Includes support for drag-and-drop program management, customizable look and feel, program auto and scheduled start, search, and much more.
Unlike many other launchers, PStart automatically uses relative paths when adding applications and documents, so portability is automatically preserved when changing drive letters as long as the applications and documents are located in the same drive as PStart.
Note: 64-bit OS users may wish to use this in a compatibility mode.

The program does indeed have minor problems on Win7: I frequently have to restart in order to get to the "Panel" view. Based on developer activity to date, we are unlikely to see an update to fix this.
