FolderIcons v1.27

Midas on 10 Dec 2014
  • 834KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on
  • Suggested by M. Maltbia

FolderIcons helps you customize the icons of your file system's folders. It works by simply adding a desktop.ini file in a folder, then changes the folder's attributes. However, FolderIcons makes this process very easy. You can undo your changes, or recursively assign the same icon to a whole folder tree.

Does anyone know of a utility that can colour label files instead of only folders? This feature is default on Mac computers, and there *must* be something like it for Win as well - but I haven't yet found it.

If you want to make this Permanent, put the icon itself into the folder that you are changing! In other words copy and paste the icon into the folder and then run the program and point to this icon as the one that you want to change the folder icon to. This way if you change a folder icon that is on a USB to something different and you plug into a different computer the changed icon will show.

FillDisk v0.02

billon on 28 Mar 2018
  • 801KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 3 Aug 2008
  • Suggested by donald

FillDisk is a simple utility that fills up a disk with data. This is useful for testing a separate application's behavior when a disk is approaching full capacity or basic free space shredding when you don't have admin access (recommend checking "No OS optimization"). The program starts with 1GB files, then drops to 512MB, 256MB and so on until it completely fills up the disk.

FillDisk has a very simple interface: just enter a folder for the files to be created and press the "Go" button. You can stop the operation at any point in time and the file that is currently being written will close.

The new version (FileSieve 3.00) is not portable.

Midas on 2015-04-17 15:40

Previous FileSieve v0.97 (no DotNET dependency) is available from http://software.bootblock.co.uk/?id=filesieve ...

Would those who tested the newer version be so kind as to report their findings in the official forum topic?

Folderico v3.7.2

webfork on 16 Jan 2019
  • 4MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 4 Jan 2007
  • Suggested by crownixx

Folderico allows you to change the default icon of any folder. It performs this feat by creating a desktop.ini file in the chosen folder that points to the desired icon (also automatically created) so that Windows Explorer will render the folder icon differently. Folderico does not need to be running for the new folder icon to be displayed, and the changes are sticky even when the hard disk or memory stick is plugged into another machine.

  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

FileCommander is a feature-rich, multi-pane file manager that supports up to 4 simultaneous browser windows (enabled with "View", "Extended view"). File highlighting to separate different file types and comes with 3 different "themes," or skins. Additionally, the program includes an "open with" capability that supports relative pathways, allowing FileCommander to open files using other portable software.

Performance enhancements over regular Explorer include individual threads for each window so the rest of the program doesn't slow down during one window's process (e.g. CD spin-up, network delay). Internal clipboard means Windows' own clipboard will not be overwritten.

Update: after extensive use, although program had a lot of promise but its unfortunately really buggy. Drag and drop outside of the window doesn't work, wouldn't refresh a new cd that was inserted, and many, many minor glitches. Pass on this one.
