Nice neat utility. I can keep an eye on the CPU usage and see if it seems excessive.
Needs to have a similar display for HDD activity.

FreeOTFE v5.21

webfork on 6 Nov 2017
  • 8MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 4 Jan 2012
  • Suggested by Rails

FreeOTFE, named for "on-the-fly disk encryption" creates one or more encrypted virtual disks using numerous available encryption algorithms (e.g. AES, Twofish, Serpent, and many more), and can be used to encrypt entire partitions. A separate application that doesn't require administrative rights called FreeOTFE Explorer is also available from the same site, using an Explorer-like interface (see version comparison).

64-bit users: FreeOTFE Explorer is functional, but Windows 7 64-bit users cannot use FreeOTFE as the drivers are unsigned.

Note: On startup, you will receive a message asking you to use portable mode drivers to start the virtual disk drivers (you need administrator rights to do this, otherwise the menu item will be grayed out). When you shutdown the program, you will also be given the option to stop the virtual disk drivers.

Note: Site offline -- linking to Sourceforge mirror.

Category:
Runs on:Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7

If using FreeOTFE:

Optionally, to disable the "do you want to enable portable mode?" prompt:

or

* Open the View - Options menu and select the Advanced tab. Click Autostart portable mode if FreeOTFE drivers not installed/running

Peter202: for reasons I can get into in the forums, I still recommend TrueCrypt despite issues mentioned in the press. Still for most people, FreeOTFE is more than adequate.

Peter202 on 2014-12-24 10:27

@webfork What exactly is the danger of using TrueCrypt? I need encryption software mostly to create a virtual volume from which i want to run my portable applications.

fSekrit v1.4

smaragdus on 25 May 2018
  • 57KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 3 Dec 2009
  • Suggested by dasfx

fSekrit is a notepad that encrypts saved information in self-contained executable (.EXE) files. Created files don't need fSekrit and can be access by simply double-clicking the item and entering the correct password.

Uses the widely recognized 256-bit AES encryption and unencrypted data is never saved to disk, making it even more secure.

Functional in 64-bit.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: None
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware/Open Source (github)
How to extract:
  1. Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice.
  2. Create a new file called fSekrit.portable
  3. Launch fSekrit.exe.
Similar/alternative apps: CryptoTE
What's new? - fixed: long-standing bug where failing to save changes when closing fSekrit
with a modified document would cause fSekrit to exit, rather than notifying of
error and let user attempt to save again.
- fixed: saves are *finally* done properly, by saving to a temporary file and
replacing the current file only when all the file writing business is done.
- added: font selection dialog, no longer do you need to much around with the
registry to set another default font. The font is still not stored in your
document, though, and is single global per-user registry setting.
- added: "portable" mode, which (for now) means it will not use %TEMP% to store
it's temporary editor executable, but instead store it in the same folder as
the opened document. Registry is still used for font selection, though!
To enabel this feature, create a file called "fSekrit.portable" in the same
folder as the document you want to function in portable mode.
- added: URLs are now recognized and turned into hyperlinks.
- fixed: Read-only notes should be a lot more sane - changed from confusing
"make read-only" that half-worked to "Save As Read-only" that works :)
- fixed: Win9x and NT4 support has been broken since version 1.35. Release builds
are now done with an older compiler toolchain, and 9x/NT4 support is back :)

You can easily get the fsekrit program from the wayback machine at:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170214195855/http://f0dder.dcmembers.com/fsekrit.index.php it says it is also valid for Win7 use.

Sherman J on 2018-05-26 12:56

I found that the version of the zip for fsekrit on the waybackmachine for 2015 is valid at 49kbytes size, the some in later snapshots are only 10kbytes and do not work.

smaragdus on 2018-05-26 18:53

@Sherman J
You do not need to download fSekrit from The Internet Archive, you can get it from its official website.

@rogerthedodger: you can download the PortableApps.com package. Extract or install it, the contents of the APP folder is all you need, delete the rest. After the first launching of IcoFX.exe the configuration files will be created

small fonts (on the app itself) = @ Kermode
Found a solution !
Dowmoad 12noon Dispay Changer (free -> google): very nice prgram, helps me a lot with old programs on my new large screen !
Install. Go to folder where installed, make a shortcut from the cd.exe folder.
Rightclick on shortcut, open properties
Richtclick IcoFX.exe, open properties, highlight target command line, copy (Ctrl + c)
Go to THE END of the same line (target) in the IconFX properties, paste (Ctrl + v); leave a space between both (there are quotation marks at the beinning and at the end of both)
Go to the space and type (without quotation marks, but leaving again a space before, in between and at the end) "-width=1152 -height=864" (or any other screen size COMPATIBLE with your screen, e.g. 1600x 900 1027x768, etc; see help of dc to find out which screen sizes are compatible).
Close properties of both.
Change the name and icon of dc.exe to IcoFX.
That's it !
(When you close IcoFX, the screen will automatically return to its initial size, so the change onlw affcts this program !)

Specular on 2015-01-06 18:35

The busy XP screenshot doesn't do the app justice. Worthwhile app for icon creation and extraction. Main limitation of this version is the lack of 512px+ size support, which OSX and now Windows 10 support.

PStart v2.11

webfork on 26 Dec 2022
  • 769KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 7 Jun 2007
  • Suggested by Tony Chard

PStart is an easy-to-use system tray program launcher with a hierarchical list of menus for launching applications and documents, much like the Windows "Start" menu. Includes support for drag-and-drop program management, customizable look and feel, program auto and scheduled start, search, and much more.

Unlike many other launchers, PStart automatically uses relative paths when adding applications and documents, so portability is automatically preserved when changing drive letters as long as the applications and documents are located in the same drive as PStart.

Note: 64-bit OS users may wish to use this in a compatibility mode.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
Path portability: Automatic relative path (eg. ..\..\personal\work.doc)
License: Freeware
How to extract:
  1. Download the installer and install using the "Portable setup" option to a folder of your choice
  2. Launch PStart.exe
Additional notes from the author (Jens Gruschel): "The installer has a combo box with all removable drives listed. But if you click the [Next] button, you can select any folder you want, so there is no need to copy the file afterwards (which you can do of course). I added this combo box, because I thought that most people would install it to a USB stick (in fact I wrote the program because I wanted such a tool for my USB stick). But since I also like programs located on my D: drive, I didn't want to limit it to removable drives."

@webfork: problem solved;
This is what happened, I had a version of PStart from 4 years ago running on my PC at the D-drive.
When I installed the newest version of PStart on my E-drive I replaced the old version of PStart on the D-drive at the same time, however only the menu of the E-drive was working.
After your last comment that I should work, I completely removed PStart from the D-drive and reinstalled it again.
Now everything works fine, I think that some remains of the old Pstart menu was interfering..does not matter anymore, I got what I want..!!
Great, thanks a lot Webfork...
