Desktop Slider removes the limits of the desktop or workspace so that it behaves like one large scrolling window hovering above a much larger desktop. You can move this camera by moving the mouse while holding keyboard or mouse buttons.

Very nice - one of the more interesting and intuitive virtual desktop applications I've used. I'd like it to automatically move to a window when I use Alt+Tab (or otherwise give focus), though.

This rather unique utility is a must for smaller screen devices like netbooks, for instance. Highly recommended. |
Qlock is a world clock program with support for alarms, notes and time synchronization. You can create clocks for different countries/cities and view them all on the desktop.Note that options marked with a [Pro] icon are payware-only features. You can try them out a number of times before a reminder window pops up and asks you to upgrade. This includes features like the integrated RSS/Atom feed reader and daily foreign exchange rates.
Note: v1.86 appears to be last portable version.

Ah, my db changes were stupid again! Do I understand it correctly NOW: v1.86 is actually the last portable one? Then we probably should have that version with the softpedia link above in the db.

I've used this for years now but recently it's started crashing without notice on my Win7x64 machine. I'm actively looking for alternatives. |

I dropped Notepad++ in favor of this one. Notepad++ is rapidly turning into bloatware. Notepad2 does not need plugins for its features, and so it is faster and much more compact, while still full of useful features.

There's now a x64 build of Notepad2. But can someone please explain to me how to get the "Open shell links" feature, so strings like www.someurl.com or adress@server.net will launch when clicked in Notepad2?

I've tried them all over the years, including the modded version, but keep coming back to Flo's original. Small; fast; no distractions. Other notepad replacements often have too many options. The only thing I would add is a tabbed interface, but it's not a deal-breaker. Using the built-in Favourites and coupled with Flo's own metapath (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1701), it's almost perfect for the way I work. |
HJSplit can split and join files above 100 GB. It can also compare files and calculate their checksum. The program is cross-platform with tools available for 9+ operating systems, including Mac, DOS, and OS/2. Functional in 64-bit.

Of course these are minor nitpicks and do not decimate the value of the application. If recovering your files are a life and death situation than this should be the last thing on your mind.

Honestly, when you accidentally delete something important off from your memory card or hard drive, the best solution to take them all back is to copy them back from your prepare drive or card data backups. Therefore, making data backups is really important. |
Universal Extractor allows you to extract files from a wide variety of archive files, including ZIP, ARJ, LZH, as well as MSI and EXE files created using various installer packages (such as Nullsoft, Wise, Inno Setup, etc). Useful for testing apps for portability because you can extract files directly from installer packages without having to go through the installation process. Note that the original developer no longer updates the program so some manual updates may be required.
Alternatively, an unofficial version with the latest-and-greatest internals is available (on Lupo's PenSuite site).
Commercial use note: license restrictions are present on included files UHARC02.EXE and UHARC04.EXE, but can be deleted without dramatic impact on the software. See website for more information.

ResizeEnable lets you turn usually static windows into resizeable windows. This is useful for small message screens that require the user to scroll to see all the contained text, common with Windows error messages as well as programs designed for smaller screens.
Not all static windows will be affected.

There's a reason some program windows aren't re-sizable. You have to add code to resize the GUI controls properly otherwise the controls will get all mangled up. this would be useful for really horribly designed windows. (where text cuts off, and you have to vertical scroll)

sounded useful for the reason i was looking for it in the first : the resizing of firefox's annoyingly small description box in bookmark properties window..what happened there was it resized alright, smaller. and when 'bigger' the dialog boxes stayed as were, just extra blank space. and yes, the readme does say it reads for last config. i suppose only when the program is on. |
RegistryViewer can open raw Windows registry hive files. The file structure is shown similar to the Windows' own Registry editor and folders, keys, and values can be searched with values can displayed in hexadecimal form.
The registry files can be opened with drag-and-drop and all registry files including SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, SAM, NTUSER.DAT, SECURITY, USERDIFF and DEFAULT are supported.

Used this program to successfully extract keys from an older backup of the Registry hive files. Followed an online guide which recommended it since it automatically tweaks the exported key file with the correct path for importing into the registry.

Update it's found on the directory page for old software: |
Easy Duplicate File Finder helps you find and remove duplicate files on your PC. It finds true duplicates by content (instead of file name and size alone). You can scan multiple folders/drives at the same time, and the search can be restricted by using a scan mask and/or specifying a size condition. Lists of duplicates can be exported to HTML.
Note: linking to what appears to be the last free version (2.4).
