Minor but extremely useful interface enhancement -- probably a keeper. Thanks.

two on 2012-04-05 19:30

Very nice idea, but half-assed execution. Resizes windows that are not supposed to be resized, including tooltips, even when scrolling list boxes where tooltips appear for long lines, which partially leads to application crashes.

Thanks, IaBaas, for posting this. May I suggest contacting the developer about that issue? I'm sure he'd pleasantly surprised by our interest. Thanks again.

ActiveHotkeys v1.3.1 build 16

billon on 21 Oct 2019

ActiveHotkeys detects what global keyboard shortcuts (hotkeys) are currently registered on the computer by various applications. This helps you determine which hotkeys are in use, and which are still available.

Note: Functional only in 32-bit. Additionally, the inability to detect which application has registered a particular shortcut is an issue with Windows and not ActiveHotKeys.

TrueCrypt v7.1a

Midas on 26 Apr 2016

TrueCrypt creates and opens secure volumes that function like an attached drive, making it possible to move files to and from a secure place, as well as open and run. Additional security features include support for key files and hidden volumes inside regular ones (for plausible deniability) for higher security, as well as hardware acceleration and benchmark tools for speed.

Supports a range of encryption algorithms including AES, Serpent, and Twofish, as well as combinations (e.g. Serpent + Twofish) in the event that one of them is eventually cracked.

Note: This program may have unfixed security vulnerabilities.  As version 7.2 only allows the opening of TrueCrypt volumes, not their creation, we are linking to a mirrror of Version 7.1a.

Category:
Runs on:Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7
Writes settings to: None
Dependencies: Administrator rights

Very nice - one of the more interesting and intuitive virtual desktop applications I've used. I'd like it to automatically move to a window when I use Alt+Tab (or otherwise give focus), though.

This rather unique utility is a must for smaller screen devices like netbooks, for instance. Highly recommended.

Drop Zone v1.0.3

Checker on 24 May 2015
  • 1MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 7 Nov 2011
  • Suggested by Checker

Drop Zone creates simple windows to quickly manage files. After dropping files or folders onto the program window, a menu of paths you've configured will pop up, allowing you to quickly copy or move files to those destinations. This organization tool is useful for users who deal with many small files or have a short list of frequent folder destinations.

To create multiple drop zones, simply make copies of DropZone.exe, rename them to something unique (e.g. DropZone1.exe, DropZone2.exe, etc.), and launch all. Since the program supports multiple instances, each drop zone can be configured independently.

Category:
Runs on:WinXP / Vista / Win7
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch DropZone.exe.
Similar/alternative apps: DropIt
What's new?
  • If there is only one configured destination, the destination menu will no longer pop up (saving you a click).

Can't you do this with right-click dragging a folder to the desktop and "create shortcut"?

Erkhyan on 2012-01-20 08:21

Awoodby> …and by manually reconfiguring every single one of your shortcuts every time you switch computers?

awoodby on 2012-01-25 19:46

Ah, right, very good point, that IS handy, to make quick links to your storage folders. You can make a folder on the thumb drive "sort_folder", then make shortcuts to folders within that, then put a shortcut to "sort_folder", but not as easy as this app. Good job in finding an app to make that's somewhat original these days.

DPC Latency Checker is a must have in any computer debugging toolkit for its ability to highlight arcane system problems; it won't fix them, but will assert their existence beyond reasonable doubt.

xp-AntiSpy v3.98

webfork on 20 Nov 2020
  • 572KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 16 Jun 2014
  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

xp-AntiSpy is allows you to easily enable/disable usually unnecessary or undesirable Windows features (e.g. Messenger, Media Player's automatic codec download, language bar (ctfmon.exe), etc.). As the name suggests, the program was originally focused on preventing privacy-sensitive elements, but has expanded to many others, including enabling hidden features like a command-line prompt in context menu and an increase in the maximum number of half-opened TCP connections (helpful for P2P applications).

Category:
Runs on:Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7
Writes settings to: Windows registry. Note that if you create a system profile(s), it writes to HKEY_USERS.
Stealth: ? No
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch xp-AntiSpy.exe.
Similar/alternative apps: xpy
What's new?
  • Reworked setting Hide shortcut arrow because it was not always working on 64bit systems.
  • Removed setting Deny access to 16-Bit-Applications from Suggested profile
  • Fixed several errors occurring on 64bit systems
  • Added Feature:
The menu Profiles now contains the entry Check profile at logon. If there’s a check mark in front of, the xp-AntiSpy will check the current selected profile everytime you logon to your system. If a setting does not conform to that profile you will be presented a dialog window, asking to reapply the profile.
  • Added feature:
Due to the amount of settings in the xp-AntiSpy it get’s complicated if you look for a special one. So I added a search field which can be enabled by selecting the menu Special>Show search field. Once you enter a search term it will be searched in all setting names and the according info text for that setting. Then only the matching settings will be presented to you in the overview. To reset the search, just press the escape key.

@anoncow: yes, both write to the registry. Seconfig is a bit more strict in some areas, while xp-Antispy has a little more flexibility in its controls.

cAPSLOCK on 2010-01-26 08:13

Well this programs JOB is to write to the registry. ;) So we shouldn't worry too much about that eh?

anoncow on 2010-01-27 02:04

The problem with the internet is that, even when you spell out and try to avoid something, that something happens anyway.
Notice "which is fine in their case"!
And about the JOB, the beggining of that sentence:
"Don't they both need to write to the registry TO DO THEIR THING"

The question is what's the difference between the two.
