Is the description of "How to extract" still valid? I ask because a lot has changed with the structure of directories and files.

Andrew Lee on 2023-06-02 09:04

@dmocha: I just downloaded the ZIP file for v9.0.1, and it seems the file/dir structure is still pretty much the same, so the extraction instruction should still be valid. Could you provide details on the diffs that you are seeing?

dmocha on 2023-06-04 08:20

@Andrew Lee: I have no objections. I'm just asking. I remember that quite a long time ago new folders and files arrived, and the procedure is still the same. That's why I'm wondering if it's up to date with these files.
I still follow this procedure and still use the portable version.

@Emka - The first item under OPTIONS look like you can set the utility to delete the jpgs when you exit the program. I have never been very sure the program actually does what it says, so I simply use the second item in OPTIONS to check and delete as necessary. Periodically I use the jpg instead the pdf so I actually find this useful. Bottom line is that I wish the author would clean all this up a bit more, but I find the utility so useful (use it every day almost) that I am prepared to work around the idiosyncrasies.

@MIKLO & _philippe: It now seems possible to select a folder for temporary files, so you can change the default location in AppData to the app's folder for example.

ThunderbirdPassDecryptor Portable v3.0 Updated

lwc on 1 May 2024
  • 1MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 13 Apr 2013
  • Suggested by guinness

ThunderbirdPassDecryptor is a tool that recovers the stored mail account password by Mozilla Thunderbird. You can also use it to recover the Thunderbird account passwords from another system (i.e. a backup or profile folder).

Note:

  • If a "master" password is set, other passwords are not accessible without it. The publisher offers a command-line FireMaster to try and brute-force the protection. Strong passwords (15+ characters) are not worthwhile to brute-force.
  • The main website download link has switch to an encrypted installer. Linking to softpedia.

DesktopOK v11.21 Updated

Andrew Lee on 1 May 2024
  • 674KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 28 Apr 2024
  • Suggested by JohnW

DesktopOK contains a host of beneficial Windows interface tweaks. The program can save the current icon view by resolution and make it easy to swap between views, showing all saved view formats in a list. Other tools include basic screenshots, the ability to force-close programs, color tool, volume and more:

  • Interface tools include reducing clutter with a minimize-to-tray by right clicking on a window close button, mouse hiding and ability to hide desktop icons after a period of inactivity (click on the desktop to make them re-appear). You can even modify default icon spacing.

  • Window management tools include scrolling any window that your mouse hovers over (not just what's in focus) and alt+drag (for moving windows without having to hold your cursor over the top bar).

Category:

How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. In this folder, create an empty text file and name it DesktopOK.ini. Launch DesktopOK.exe or DesktopOK_x64.exe.

Possible issues:
  • The program is in German: If not automatically set to the English, click the by clicking the flag in the lower left corner of the window for any of 24 world languages.
  • It saves to AppData: If you don't create an empty text file, it writes to %APPDATA%/DesktopOK/DesktopOK.ini. If you accidentally skipped this step, you can simply move this file over to the application folder.

It does not use the system cache, so other processes do not get bogged down during the copy process and a speed setting is also available, including pause. It supports Unix-style include/exclude wildcards filters.

Alternatively, PortableApps.com packages the last open source version as FastCopy Portable.

Re: the license change, it looks like no previously free features have been removed from the free version, and there are some improvements - so still worth updating if only for private use.
