FillDisk v0.02

billon on 28 Mar 2018
  • 801KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 3 Aug 2008
  • Suggested by donald

FillDisk is a simple utility that fills up a disk with data. This is useful for testing a separate application's behavior when a disk is approaching full capacity or basic free space shredding when you don't have admin access (recommend checking "No OS optimization"). The program starts with 1GB files, then drops to 512MB, 256MB and so on until it completely fills up the disk.

FillDisk has a very simple interface: just enter a folder for the files to be created and press the "Go" button. You can stop the operation at any point in time and the file that is currently being written will close.

Runs on:WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10

Eraser v5.8.8

webfork on 16 May 2015
  • 2MB (uncompressed)
  • Released on
  • Suggested by MISIIM

Eraser is a feature-rich tool to permanently delete sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it with random patterns. Includes a scheduler, free-space wipe, random number generation for better overwriting, page file wipe at shutdown, password-protected settings, and more. The program includes a wide variety of wiping mechanisms from very fast (only deleting the first and last 2kb) to extraordinarily slow (35-pass). Note that all but the most security-minded users should only need only the 1-pass "pseudo-random" wipe.

Alternatively, Eraser Portable is a PortableApps version.

Note: The 5.x branch is no longer supported. There is a 6.x branch available, but there is no official portable version for this branch and it requires the .NET framework.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? No
Unicode support: No
License: GPL
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch Eraser.exe.
What's new? Do not erase sparse, compressed or encrypted files when FL2KB erasure is selected to prevent disk corruption.
Fix Win32 Eraser builds to be truly Unicode builds.
A few 64-bit fixes.
Ensure that Eraser uses the latest runtimes packaged with the installer. This should fix hangs when using the Context menu.
Fixed the About dialog after migrating to Unicode
Sign all binaries packaged with the installer
Allow erasing UNC paths
Fixed memory exhaustion when doing a free space erase for FAT drives
Migrate non-Unicode custom erasure methods to the Unicode methods so that old custom erasure methods are preserved upon upgrade

Ensure that Eraser is not running when the Eraser setup is run

I confirm that this link gives good portable version 2.4
http://www.lupopensuite.com/db/easyduplicatefinder.htm

I totally detest as thoroughly non-portable
www.winaddons.com/easy-duplicate-finder-241/
This insists upon adding its own Start Menu folder with 4 links from the system to itself,
and adds itself to "Programs and Features" as an item that can be uninstalled.
It may well use the registry - I just have not inspected that because what I have seen so far is horrendous.

USB Flash Tools v2.10

Andrew Lee on 12 Dec 2014

  • Released on
  • Suggested by Andrew Lee

USB Flash Tools is a toolkit that provides several functions for flash memory, including SD or Compact Flash cards and USB thumb drives. The program helps verify reported capacity, backup and restore of a drive (with optional compression), and securely erase the contents. A variety of secure erase methods are available including free space or whole-drive wipe using either basic (zero out / pseudorandom) or high-security standards (like DoD).

Note: While more secure, more passes are progressively slower and can reduce the life of the flash memory drive.

The author "Dirk Paehl" has an interesting collection of software, I'm not sure if they are all portable though.

roddersg on 2009-08-17 02:41

What I don't like about this program is there the indication that it is running is just the "Pass N" on the bottom bar and the "waiting" icon on the application. A progress bar would be much better.
As for doing its job, the data space looks pretty much randomised and I can't see my old data.

"This program doesn't use system registry and can be run from portable devices. All settings are written to INI file."

Would the lack of filename scrambling fool a recovery tool into classing the file as in good condition?

I've run this several times over my drives and Recuva, Undelete plus, Restoration and Pc inspector file recovery are all picking up thousands of "deleted" files in good/excellent condition

Disappointed on 2008-09-28 03:12

No longer portable.
The ini file for the settings is stored in the application data folder

DeepBurner Free Portable Edition v1.9.0

Midas on 15 Jan 2015

DeepBurner Free Portable Edition is an advanced CD and DVD burning package. It supports a very wide range of internal and external (USB 2.0 and FireWire) CD and DVD writers. The free version supports creation of data CD/DVD, audio CDs and ISO images.

Category:
Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP
Writes settings to: Windows registry. Despite the claim that the portable edition writes settings to the application folder, I find that it still writes to the Windows registry and user profile folder. However, the number of settings is small and non-crucial, so I think it can be accepted as portable.
Unicode support: No
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package for the Portable Edition and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch DeepBurner.exe.
What's new?
  • Added: optimization procedures for burning data CDs/DVDs
  • Updated: language files
  • Fixed: all known omissions

very bad. One of the worse software I've used

Bol on 2008-04-06 00:39

Very interesting application when you take time to invest in it. Much more than Rainlendar although less fancy interface. Has also the import tools and is fully Unicode. Must be used by a large number of users, as it appears in 7 languages already. New search function quite usefull. Imports are possible from Excel. Extra features, such as the Money application, can be used to replace money or quicken in simple households. The music and film functions are quite handy. I'm positively surprised : it's much better than it seems at first hand.

Apparently not free: "We advise you that the downloaded file gives you the right to try the program for 30 days. If you want to use the program longer than the 30 days, you need to buy the license key with us. The downloaded program is fully functional, and contains all 8 languages"
