Cathy indexes files stored on removable media (CD's, DVD's or even diskettes), hard disks or net drives, to create searchable catalogs that can be used without having access to original media. The program is small, fast and easy-to-use with search capabilities based on file name, date and size. Additional features include filtering options, search duplicates or singles, customisable date format etc.

If files are available (external/network drive connected, DVD inserted) they can be opened (executed) or deleted directly. Other features include drag and drop support available, printing of both directory trees and MP3 album/song lists, and disk space usage analysis.

This program is great. I can't believe Windows is now so convoluted that the basic out of the box search works so poorly.

FYI, I posted a couple of problems I found trying to make Cathy portable @ http://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=62490#p62490

v2.31

Simple little program, but unfortunate doesn't support unicode, so if you have any files w/ foreign language or other special characters, they'll get cataloged as "?" for any unicode character.

@Kermode: Cathy can handle different drives on the same drive letter; however if you catalog on (F:), and later plugin your drive, while (F:) is being used; and you get the drive letter (G:), the database cannot be refreshed.

indexyourfiles doesn't seem to handle different drives on the same drive letter - does cathy?

Try index your Files:
-Is Portable
-Support Unicode
-Search Inside Files
-Is easy to use with a standard windows GUI
-Compacts the indexes
-Create indexes for Only the directories you select
-Internal display for found files
-Is compact and runs from a Single file

Is by far superior to Cathy!:

Even if I am sure of not using UNICODE, I can't save any setting...

@ Old Geek: If you follow the instructions (see link) you will see that it works. You have probably not saved cathy.reg as an ascii file, have you? Try that and see if it works better.

This is a great program and I would like to thank the author. However this program is not stealth. If you use the cathy.reg and and start with cathy.exe -ini. It will read from the cathy.reg and not write to the registry. What it does is it creates a file in your windows folder named cathy.ini. Which it will read and write changes to. Check and see.

The link seems to be working again. BTW, isn't 2.28.3 about 6 or more months old, I downloaded the above zip and compared hashes with my existing zip (using HashTab) and it was a match. I didn't pay attention to the version until the match, I have had this version as far as I can tell for months. I guess "New" in this case means "Recently Added".
