Simutrans is a SimCity-style transport and economic simulation game. You can build the railroad networks with platforms, discharging quays, level crossings, signals and much more. Create your own bus company: transport people throughout the city and help make cities grow by laying out bus routes. Explore just how many industrial choices and connections are available.
Note: the graphics of the game are available through downloadable paksets. You can also use download-paksets.exe in the game's root directory.

The CURRENT (2020-11-12) "offline" aka portable version instrustions:
Lots of forum searching to find this "stand-alone/offline portable install method note".
The "complete" stand-alone offline version is found here:

Optional to reduce size:
Downloading the smallest "graphics pak" which is: "Pak32 Comic" found here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/simutrans/files/pak32.comic/pak32.comic%20for%20102-0/
THEN renamE the folder from "pak32" to "pak" and delete/replace the original.
Remove all languages/fonts but the main one you speak/read (example: English for me with font "Prop-Latin1.bdf")
This will result in SMALLEST SIZE, current graphics game: unzipped, file "fixed" and UPX'ed (lzma) compressed size: 4.19mb

This entry needed a desperate clean-up and update. I've replaced the pak128 download link with the actual game and added a note about the graphics paks. The rest of the entry has been updated appropriately.

Charming old-school graphics, seems to have a fairly active community, constantly updated, now at v112.3, don't know if portable.

Just to let you know:
1. Simutrans is constantly releasing new versions
2. Pak128 (mentioned on this page) is only one of several paks - including one, for example, that is made up of graphics that were drawn by hand and scanned in. It's neat!
3. You can find the latest downloads, and lots of great information, at the Simutrans Forums - http://forum.simutrans.com/
@ 4.19mb in on drive size; this is the most current (still being updated) simcity/open TTD like game that is will run on ANY PC current enough to have a USB port.
*Note: as you might see from many of my posts I have a fever for "best bang per kb" in portable apps. Can we make lists here in forums?
