Regshot is a small registry compare utility that allows you to take a snapshot of your registry make changes to your system (such as installing a program) and then taking a second snapshot to compare. The comparison report can be produced in text or HTML format and contains a list of all modifications that have taken place between the first and second snapshot. In addition, you can also specify folders (with subfolders) to be scanned for changes as well.

Alternatively, RegShot Portable automatically switches between 32 and 64-bit and adjusts paths.

Runs on:Win95 / Win98 / WinME / WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista
Writes settings to: Application folder
Stealth: ? Yes
License: GPL
How to extract: Download the source + binary ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch regshot.exe.

Optionally, delete the src subfolder.
Similar/alternative apps: Regshot2 Unicode
What's new?
  • x64 and Unicode versions.
  • You can compare shots saved with different "UseLongRegHead" option.
  • Unicode shots have .hivu extension.
  • Loading ANSI hive files in Unicode builds and vice versa is not supported.
  • The skip list is now additionally checked against the single name of keys, values, dirs and files.
  • Internally Regshot always uses the short forms HKLM and HKU, so these have to be used in your skip lists too.
Full changelog (inclusive of the later Beta release) is at https://sourceforge.net/projects/regshot/files/regshot/1.9.1-beta/.

robertcollier4 - The Regshot2 you are posting about is a different app. It's either a totally different freeware app that copied the layout or an app illegally using the real Regshot's code as a base and not distributing the newer source as required by the GPL. Either way, this entry is about the real Regshot, which is open source, Unicode, portable and has 32-bit and 64-bit versions (the PortableApps.com version even switches between them automatically). It's also under active development unlike 'RegShot2' which is abandoned.

This looked cool, but its not what I thought it was. the description is (partially) accurate, you can't move icons around via drag and drop, doesn't support custom background images, and only one window.

jessharpur on 2014-11-14 02:12

The download link gives an File Not Found error. There are now two separate zips, one for 32bit and one for 64.

Fergus on 2010-09-29 13:45

I've done this, but I still get the "Register Now" nag. Pressing clears the nag, but it's awfully irritating. Is there a way of disabling it?

Fergus on 2010-09-29 19:46

OK managed to get a register code; use it once and hey presto away you go. BUT the code is written o a local gsview.ini which also incorporates named drive letters. Move your USB stick to another host machine where it will very likely be named differently and gsview.ini is suddenly broken -- you have to supply the reg code again. Very VERY annoying; not true portable freeware, at all ...

Ascend4nt on 2012-01-24 22:37

Setup is a bit more tricky then running a self-extracting executable, and dumping Ghostscript in the same folder. Here's what I had to do:
1. Download the GSView self-extracting exe and the associated Ghostscript exe
2. Open the GSView self-extracting exe with 7-zip or other archive software and extract everything except the files indicated in 'How to Extract'. (RUNNING the exe will install a non-portable version!!)
3. Create a 'gs9.04' subfolder in the folder that GSviewPortable is in. (it seems the name is usually 'gs' followed by the version #).
4. Open the Ghostscript exe with an archive utility, go to $_OUTDIR, and extract all the files from that folder into the subfolder just created (in this case, gs9.04)
5. Now you can run GSviewPortable

*Note: I can verify what Fergus says - Registration screen pops up on run. Not a huge deal for me

Sounds nice. Does it have any advantages over CCleaner?

Pax on 2010-12-23 12:56

Haven't run the application yet but it looks like a good addition. Love the documentation on the site where the author details *exactly* what's cleaned out. It's rare to see that level of documentation and it's appreciated.

Looking over the site, this app also has a ridiculously easy to use plug-in system which the author hopes will spur user contributions and increase the number of apps and registry entries covered.

This one looks like one to keep an eye on.
