gms9810: This is a permanent problem. Windows is not simple and few developers know its ins and outs. Hopefully the dev will seek advice, help, or post it on a forum somewhere.

I'm very disappointed in this. I tried it, liked it, installed it on all 4 of my computers and recommended it to some other people. Then when I tried to install it on my laptop it wouldn't work. I sent the error message to the application's maker and was told (in simplest form) that he didn't understand Windows well enough to help me and I was out of luck. That isn't verbatim but it's what I was told. I cannot recommend this to anyone as the programmer doesn't seem to know how his own software works in Windows.

This is a great App...takes some getting used to initially..but works well
have used it for years without any issue,I recall it not being the easiest to figure out.

What might pose a problem, especially on Win7x64 but also on XP, is importing desktop shortcuts as buttons into your launcher groups. If you cannot launch the programmes that way, try creating the buttons directly from the programmes' exe-files, which is a bit of a kerfuffle, rummaging through your folder structure. Anyhow, that's what worked for me.

Just starting to try and use this launcher and it looks promising. My gripes with it is that the hotkey doesn't seem to work with Windows 7 but more importantly is that when the menu takes up the whole length of the screen then there is no way to scroll through it or even to move it as the edges disappear beyond the screen. Also why is it that when I choose the smaller icons that the menu's size remain exactly the same despite having tiny icons? As the others suggested, PStart still wins at this stage but future versions may change this if changes are made.

Does this interfere with portable use on limited Vista accounts? Anyone run into this?

Best StartMenu/Desktop replacement i ever tried (and i tried them all). I been using it for years without a glitch.

Word of advice: before posting a comment try it first (free tip for Banshee).

I had 8start Launcher up and going in no time. The value that it adds to my PC experience I could not even begin to list. In 24 years of using computers, this has far and away been the best addition I've mad to my personal computing time. Thanks Andy for a product that I'm sure will just get better and better!

This launcher is the best! It did take a little time to figure out a few things but it is well worth the effort. Highly recommended.

8start Launcher last version not only organizes shortcuts into groups and categories, but now also is a tree notes program.
The graphic interface is excellent with many configurable skins.
8start Launcher is excellent.

To upgrade from version 1.6 to version 1.7, run the 1.7 setup file, select folder of version 1.6 as destination folder. Select overwrite when prompted. All settings are remain unchanged.

Any tips on upgrading for those of us using 1.6?

No great problems using it. Setup was a bit difficult initially because I needed to create groups before I could add buttons, but once that was done, all went very well. I like the small footprint on the screen.

Well i'm going to have to join the choir, it just tried it and it seems like total junk - a small window in the upper left corner where no buttons seem to work - an icon on the toolbar which doesn't have a menu or anything either. A quick delete for me.

You can move it from top left corner by drag the border

Just tried this and as others have said it's not very intuitive. Also I seem unable to move it from top left corner of my screen. Other than that it's a nice app. Some mouse over effects on the icons would be a nice touch.

I tried this, but it's not very intuitive. It is quite good but i think that 'PStart' is still probably the best and easiest to use and also allows you to keep the desktop clean.

The version from this site is actually NOT 1.4.1, but 1.4 from december last year. Which is actually a good thing. You can get the new version from the original website, but it has a problem with showing icons for relative paths (very essential for portability). Therefore, I'm still using the old version from this site.

Lemming, make sure you select "Absolute path with drive letter", or "Relative path" when you create the link. Then you won't have any problem when moving to another machine.

Like it and would use it but... not realy all that portable!! If you change computer and your portable drive is allocated a different drive letter then you dont get a populated menu!! :o(

Love it. Looks good, easy to use. My 11 year old son can use it so not sure why anyone is having problems...

If you ask me (from the screeshot) this app is messier and more complicated than any windows startmenu/desktop that I have seen.....

I wouldn't try to promote this as a simpler alternative - it is definately for techies.

I like the concept and I would like to use it, but it doesn't seem to be very easy to figure out. I look forward to a future version that supports drag and drop for adding icons. Also, ran once on my XP Pro machine, then disappeared for some reason and wouldn't start up again. I'll keep my eyes open for the next version.
