Gwennel Doc v0.15

billon on 29 May 2018
  • 359KB (uncompressed)
  • Released on 23 Dec 2013
  • Suggested by Cornflower

Gwennel is a lightweight word processor that takes an innovative approach to formatting options by separating them into a tree-like structure. This is useful for handling long documents with clear, organized formatting tools or for users who wish to focus on the text first and formatting second. Any style changes (such as headings, lists, or colors) are propagated throughout the entire document and, although only able to open and save OpenDocument (.odt) files, this makes the program a capable WYSIWYG editor. Additionally, users can open existing files and make rapid changes to the entire document.

Category:
Runs on:WinNT / Win2K / WinXP / Vista / Win7 / Win8 / Win10
Writes settings to: None
Stealth: ? Yes
Unicode support: Yes
License: Freeware
How to extract: Download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice. Launch gwennel.exe.
What's new?
  • New Feature: basic find command.
  • Bug fix: use the text color of paragraph for bullets.
  • The executable is no longer packed with UPX because of all those crappy antivirus.

It is not at all intuitive, but once you play with it a bit, It comes together.
I probably won't use it on my own computers where Open Office Portable is much handier, but as I like to keep my usb key light, I keep it there. Hint: go over your Open Office documents and see what styles you like to use, and update the openoffice-style.gwen template. I found this makes it more user friendly, as I am dealing with my own tastes.

tpig on 2011-03-12 06:57

I've tested it. I does support Unicode.

Nothing to see here. There are far better, completely freeware text editors out there. First that comes to mind is Notepad++, which also has its own plugin system.

For those of you that want something even better, there's Atom, from the developers behind Github. Portable, modern interface, and fully extensible. I don't think you can ask for better.

i 'd already dl a "portable" v2.1.0.1 from softpedia. it just unzips. creates some files in same folder (or subfolder) on 1st run. readme says willcreate a strokes.bin also, but did not notice that (but didn't search hdd for that file, or search for filedate of time of 1st run of kudaz)
download page on kudaz geocities.jp is a bit confusing. 2.1.0.1 ver number is same as here (as of now and softpedia when i dled). further down on kudaz page are two diff updates of the executable.
kudazeo.zip 9/9/2007, kudaz.exe 1/28/2007 properties 2.2.9.7 v2.1.0.1 Service Release 3 (all of which matches the exe in the softpedia dl)
kdzeof.zip 1/27/2007, kudaz.exe 9/9/2007 properties 2.3.0.1 readmef says "v2.1.0.1 SR-3h ", which seems to be the not stable version.

This is an extremely fast launching tabbed editor. Although light on features, it's very good for quickly scanning files and makes a good notepad replacement.

smaragdus on 2014-09-05 00:13

It seems that Extreme Editor has been abandoned long time ago. It's minimalistic and extremely light but lacks essential features such as URL detection and encoding (it is useless with Unicode characters).

I dropped Notepad++ in favor of this one. Notepad++ is rapidly turning into bloatware. Notepad2 does not need plugins for its features, and so it is faster and much more compact, while still full of useful features.

Someone mentioned AkelPad. Some of its plugins don't work too well, and the syntax highlighting of HTML files isn't nearly as good as that of Notepad2.

Midas on 2012-07-01 01:24

There's now a x64 build of Notepad2. But can someone please explain to me how to get the "Open shell links" feature, so strings like www.someurl.com or adress@server.net will launch when clicked in Notepad2?

domestique on 2013-10-25 00:27

I've tried them all over the years, including the modded version, but keep coming back to Flo's original. Small; fast; no distractions. Other notepad replacements often have too many options. The only thing I would add is a tabbed interface, but it's not a deal-breaker. Using the built-in Favourites and coupled with Flo's own metapath (http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1701), it's almost perfect for the way I work.
