I've done this, but I still get the "Register Now" nag. Pressing clears the nag, but it's awfully irritating. Is there a way of disabling it?

Fergus on 2010-09-29 19:46

OK managed to get a register code; use it once and hey presto away you go. BUT the code is written o a local gsview.ini which also incorporates named drive letters. Move your USB stick to another host machine where it will very likely be named differently and gsview.ini is suddenly broken -- you have to supply the reg code again. Very VERY annoying; not true portable freeware, at all ...

Ascend4nt on 2012-01-24 22:37

Setup is a bit more tricky then running a self-extracting executable, and dumping Ghostscript in the same folder. Here's what I had to do:
1. Download the GSView self-extracting exe and the associated Ghostscript exe
2. Open the GSView self-extracting exe with 7-zip or other archive software and extract everything except the files indicated in 'How to Extract'. (RUNNING the exe will install a non-portable version!!)
3. Create a 'gs9.04' subfolder in the folder that GSviewPortable is in. (it seems the name is usually 'gs' followed by the version #).
4. Open the Ghostscript exe with an archive utility, go to $_OUTDIR, and extract all the files from that folder into the subfolder just created (in this case, gs9.04)
5. Now you can run GSviewPortable

*Note: I can verify what Fergus says - Registration screen pops up on run. Not a huge deal for me

There are instructions on my website for putting the vb6 runtimes into the ybook program folder on the memory stick. The only sticking point is the rich text control, which has to be registered with the OS, but that just means you may not be able to open RTF files directly.

yBook2 is also available, uses dotnet (or mono) instead of vb6, and also works with unicode files.

grannyGeek on 2011-04-25 08:47

Installed this on my portable hard-drive, including the PenDrive runtimes into the default Temp folder inside the yBook folder. It does work on both my office pcs ( XP-Pro SP3, and Win7 Enterprise).
Only tested so far with the included free html e-book --- and it looks pretty good.
Nicely configurable, and seems nicely flexible.

It won't work on my home pc with XP-Pro SP3, when I try to advance to next page it freezes, and I have to kill it with Task Manager. Sadly, there seems to be no guidance for trouble-shooting, nor is any contact link provided, so I don't have a clue where to start trouble-shooting this to get it working at home. :(

An excellent basic HTML editor for new and intermediate Web page authors. Although the program has a few bugs here and there, it is easily one of the best free (non-text only) Web page editors available. Its cross-platform nature (windows, linux, mac) means you'll be able to edit your files no matter where you are.

Because NVU was never updated after its initial creation, a successor with some bug fixes and additional features is the also portable KompoZer: http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1209

@jimdorey: I'm a little confused why we had a listing that this works with Win10 -- it really doesn't. When this version of the program stopped being developed, Win7 wasn't even out yet. Anyway, I recommend trying another software package for that OS. I've updated the entry.

joby_toss on 2016-06-02 11:49

@jimdorey: v5.3 works fine on my win 10 x64 using a 1080p screen resolution. Maybe you're using a high DPI screen/4k monitor, and only the last version (8.4, payware, but worth every penny) works fine in that case.
